Ive always liked the mix of uniforms despite it going against how DS9 had up until that point (and until they were phased out for the FC uniforms) portrayed them to differentiate Station and Ship based Officers.

It added depth to the crew as well as providing a more comfortable looking option, I love the TNG uniforms (especially with the updated Comm Badge) as much as any TNG fan however they do look rather stiff and restrictive. I would hate to be Picard fighting Soran in either the TNG tunic or the proposed GEN replacement.

If there was something to complain about Generations for the uniforms would be one of the last on my list.

The concept uniforms would have been better than the uniforms used on the TNG show, though. The TNG show uniforms haven't aged too well with the Charlie Brown midriff design.
I totally agree. It would've added some class to the early seasons, since the S1-2 uniforms look ridiculous compared to the more professional S3-7 uniforms.

My opinions in the uniforms have shifted as I got older. As a kid in the late 90s, I thought the S3 TNG uniforms were a vast improvement. Now I don't see it quite that way. The original TNG uniforms had a certain high-end fashion to them that was lost to in S3 forward, when the uniforms became a bit frumpy and loose — mirroring 90s style trends.

I loved the First Contact uniforms when they were first used in 1996. But now I don't care for them nearly as much, especially as seen on DS9. The gray yoke became way too big and dominant (especially on that weirdo version that Sisko wore sometimes with the communicator on the yoke). And I really dislike the thick, padded quilted look. The division colored garments beneath the jackets had colors that seemed fresh when they debuted, but have aged for me about as well as a green 96 Plymouth Voyager with dark green injection-molded plastic bumper (a horrible 90s color that always reminds me of Janeway's ready room). While re-watching early seasons of DS9, I'm struck by how much I enjoy seeing the characters in those original uniforms, and how much I prefer those colors.

So now when I look at early TNG and DS9, I actually enjoy the uniforms as they were originally envisioned.

I actually have pretty much all those action figures somewhere. I would've liked this uniform over the mix of TNG/DS9 uniforms which didn't seem to be explained at all. When it started, the DS9 uniform seemed to be the 'Class B' or 'working' uniform, for areas where you'd get dirty, like the Navy's working uniform, and the TNG uniform would be for shipboard duty, like the Navy's khaki uniforms have been.

The mixed uniforms just seemed like a random mix with no rhyme or reason.

What would've made more sense is having people on the Array be in the DS9 uniforms, and have the TNG crew in the Generations uniform, with only background actors who are in engineering using the DS9 uniforms, or enlisted using it as well.

Those alternative uniforms are interesting. May have made for a good fresh start going into the movie era and a nice homage to the 'maroon jacket' era of TOS movies.

However, I found the final uniform result in GEN to be a bit of a mess. In a given scene, some were wearing the classic TNG uniform, and others were wearing the DS9 uniform.

Towards the end of the movie, more and more characters seemed to be wearing the DS9 uniform, and a few held on with the TNG uniform.

I'm happy with both uniforms, they're both great, but I found the inconsistency confusing and a slight detractor from the movie. I'm surprised the actors and production staff didn't voice their concerns about the obvious uniform inconsistencies in this film.

I would have preferred to have seen just one type of uniform to be worn by the senior officers of the ship, either the classic TNG or the DS9. It would have given the TNG era of the film a much more professional and consistent look.

Given that it was the first big motion picture outing for TNG, then I believe the DS9 uniform may have been more appropriate to show that TNG was starting a new era. This would have also been fitting with the new commbadge design and bridge refit. I believe that it would also have been fitting to link TNG, DS9 and VOY with one uniform.

We've seen numerous rationalizations for the differences between what we see on the small screen and what we see on the big screen as attributable to the disparity in budgets. I was thrilled to see the various spruce ups to the Ent-D in Generations. These uniforms would have been a welcome addition!

at the cost of resurrecting this thread AGAIN ;-) i never knew that there were new uniforms planned that were i used, id always thought the plan had been to switch to the ds9 uniforms but that was then abandoned and that the way it worked out on screen was down to shooting order. So really interesting to have read this so many years later.

A friendly note: This thread's been inactive for almost 4 years (as per the date at the bottom of the last post before yours). The moderators generally discourage us from reviving long dormant threads since some of the participants will have left the board. Generally speaking, if the thread has been inactive for a year or more, don;t post in it. If the subject is of real interest to you, they suggest seeing if there's recent thread or starting a new thread on the topic.

Here's a thread on "Official Policy on Resurrecting Old Threads?" which might prove illuminating.
