Judging from the concept art and the action figures, I'm a big fan of those alternate uniforms. The First Contact uniforms look a little too drab to really say "Star Trek" to me. As someone said above, these look a bit more like a natural evolutionary step from the last batch of TNG-era uniforms than do the First Contact greys. Then you throw in the jacket look and the rank stripes on the sleeves and I'm totally sold.

Of the TNG\DS9\VOY era, I like the First Contact uniforms the best. But I think they would have been even better if they used the sleeve stripes\ranks more like the concept uniforms.

The concept uniforms would have been better than the uniforms used on the TNG show, though. The TNG show uniforms haven't aged too well with the Charlie Brown midriff design.

The uniforms of Star Trek:Generations-whether speaking of the ones seen onscreen or planned potential uniforms not seen onscreen-were miles better than the ones introduced in First Contact and used in the subsequent two films and whichever series they were relevant to.

I totally agree. It would've added some class to the early seasons, since the S1-2 uniforms look ridiculous compared to the more professional S3-7 uniforms.

I'm sure somewhere I saw a pic of laforge wearing one and it looked good.!!!
He did. They actually began filming with the new uniforms, and the first scenes that were shot were of Geordi's torture at Soran's hands. Then, a day or two into filming the TNG parts of the film they scrapped the new uniforms.

If executed well and good materials were used, hell yeah! :) The regal and posher feel these ones had would have suited Picard down to the ground.

I don't particularly care for the new uniforms. However, I don't like that they switched to the DS9 uniforms halfway through the movie even more.

The nutty thing is, they spent half the movie's budget on the sailing ship Enterprise scene. They made these elaborate antique sailing costumes for all the crew that they used for a total of about 15 minutes, but when they needed new Starfleet uniforms, they borrowed ill-fitting ones from the DS9 cast. The whole sailing ship scene was pointless anyway, as it was just for Worf's promotion which had nothing to do with the rest of the movie.

And BTW, what's the deal with this thread topic constantly being resurrected? Before, it was a year and a half; now it's two years! WTF?

I definitely would have prefered them to that gray dirge we got in First Contact.

I would have liked to have seen them in the movie as another uniform variant, although not necessarily replacing the original TNG uniforms. They would have made a great TNG-era "service dress" uniform, versus the "full dress" we normally saw.

Maybe 'cause zombies are "in" these days??

This suprised me as well. I'm easily surprised.

To be honest I've never had a problem with the DS9 jumpsuits turning up in GENS, in fact I used to think they looked pretty neat next to the regular TNG unis. :)

The only issue I think there is with 'em is that it's such a sudden change. Which is exactly the problem that the powers that be claim they were worried about by changing to the alternative uniforms, which is weird because after seven seasons of The Next Generation the DS9 jumpsuits *still* constitute that kind of major visual shift, so goodness knows what they were thinking there.

In fact, the use of the DS9 jumpsuits might even have been a *more* dramatic visual shift than the alternative uniforms would have been. Think about it. The alternative uniforms do largely stick to the tried-and-tested TNG television series style Actually, I've long had the theory that the change was made on two fronts: one, the producers felt the alternative uniforms didn't look different *enough* to make a strong visual imprint; and two, that they knew whatever uniform got introduced here would be used throughout VOY, and the need for that series to look visually distinct from TNG was very important.

And while I've seen them defended in terms of giving the show a wider variety of uniforms or showing a transitition to a new look, and yeah I *get* that. But I do think it'd have been easier to buy it if we'd seen it happen gradually over the course of the seventh season on TV, maybe culminating in the hero crew all wearing the DS9 jumpsuits in All Good Things. Of course, they couldn't actually plan it that far ahead, because the decision to use the DS9 jumpsuits instead of the abandoned uniforms was made during production on GENS.
