Star Trek Fans & NY Yankee Fans (much in common)

How is it competition?

You can't see a Mets and a Yankees game at the same time, you know. ;)

Shea Stadium is not a great ballpark, it's a cookie cutter piece of crap

At least we agree on something....

they needed a new stadium. The Yankees had a great stadium, with history and tradition, and would have been completely fine for many years. You think that if the Met's got a new park, and the Yankee's didn't, all of a sudden attendance would drop for the Yankees and they would loose money? No way, in any way shape or form. Who fills up Yankee stadium? Yankee's fans. It's not like they would all say, lets go to CitiField because it's brand new. They would still make money. It's still one of the largest, if not the largest capacity parks in the majors. It's not like they needed more seating.

The fact is the Yankee's did not need a new park. I honestly think that if the Mets were not getting a new park, the Yankees would be in Yankee stadium for years to come. The draw of Yankee Stadium is it's history and tradition, and that is now all lost I believe, just replaced with a copy.

You're a Sox fan who hates the Yankees. What the hell do you care what happens to Yankee Stadium?

Oops, forgot one thing: You Bostonians better fix that fucking Kenmore T station, or somebody's gonna get trampled one of these nights. Believe it or not, I have been to Fenway, and that crowd after the game was nasty. :wtf:

Tom Servo: The only reason you're making an argument against the Yankees' new stadium is you'd like a new stadium to replace the wretched Fenway Park. Oh, the jealousy! The Sox' two wins after many decades of choking are not the harbinger of a Red Sox century, for one simple reason: free agency. BTW, you may laugh at Yankees fans because they're arrogant, but Red Sox fans have bags of hubris -- that's false pride, friendo! :p -- RR

^ I've seen the neighborhood around Fenway. There's nowhere near enough room to build a replacement.

As for the fans being arrogant: Show me fans of a winning team who aren't. :p

I don't doubt it, Babaganoosh! Red Sox fans are obnoxious even in NY, so in their natural habitat, they must be downright insufferable! Whoa! But you haven't lived until you're a Yankees fan living down south! I lived in Nashville, TN from 1995 to 1998 and during that time, the Yankees played against the Braves in the '96 World Series. I came in wearing my Yankees ballcap and got all kinds of crap! One guy said to me, it was the day after the Yanks won the Series, "Someone's gonna take you out if you keep wearing that cap!" I replied, "Maybe so, but I'm a New Yorker -- if I'm going out, I'm taking him with me!" :guffaw: -- RR

No jealousy at all, NONE, despite what you Yankee fans may think. I am a Red Sox fan, but I am also a Baseball fan, I appreciate the tradition and history that comes with Yankee stadium, and it's sad they are throwing it all away for a few bucks.

And I can always tell when one is just a Yankee fan, and not a baseball fan, when they say that Fenway Park is a dump. If one is a true baseball fan, one recognizes the value and significance of places such as Fenway, Wrigley, and Yankee stadium, the three most significant ballparks in the Majors.

I'll keep Fenway thank you. You guys can have your billion dollar copy. The only way Fenway will get replaced is when it has to be.

Actually I was referring more to the sheer size of the crowd. (The only overt nastiness I experienced was all those roadside stands selling obnoxious anti-NY T-shirts. You don't see people in New York pulling that shit against Boston, do you?)

I realize that with the surrounding buildings near Fenway being what they are, there's only so much expansion they can do to the station, but if they don't do something major, then people are going to get hurt trying to get into it. Especially if it's after a big win (or loss) in which a large portion of the fans are gonna be shitfaced to begin with.

At least with the Yankees (and the Mets), the subway stations are right next to the parks, and are (apart from the Yankee Stadium station's IND platforms) aboveground. So it's much easier to get to them.

As for Fenway itself: I liked the place. I'm glad I got to go. The only part of the place I couldn't stand was the concession area. They'd better think about renovating that. If there's any part of Fenway that could conceivably be viewed as dump-like, that would be it.

Time to put this all to rest once and for all...

The Yankees are the Borg.

The Red Sox are the Dominion.

Donald Fehr is a Ferengi.

Bud Selig is a Talaxian.

Scott Boras is Colonel Green.

The Kansas City Royals are redshirts.

Stop living in the past and join the rest of us in the 21st century, Yankees fans. Times have changed. :p

That being said, the closing of Yankee Stadium is a big deal for all of baseball, and I'm glad they were able to win their final game there. And I'm especially glad that Mariano Rivera got to end it. I respect him more than any other Yankee. :techman:

Agree with your second paragraph, Skywalker. Esp. about Mariano Rivera -- Mo is the man! As for your first, only time will tell. Hope springs eternal for all sports fans -- hell, no one thought the Giants would win the Super Bowl, and they're 3 and 0 now! -- RR

I dearly hope that Bob Sheppard will be well enough to announce at least the first game in the new ballpark (he is under contract to do so). I'm very glad he was able to do the introduction at the last game.

I'm kind of out of the loop on this. Is Bob Sheppard set to retire? Is he sick or is it simply that he's three million years old?

As both an avid baseball fan and a radio guy, it's sad whenever one of the great voices goes silent, whether he's a broadcaster or not.

He hasn't retired, but his health kept him out of the announcer's booth for most of this season. He opted not to come back for the final game at Yankee Stadium (he submitted a prerecorded intro instead) because he felt he wouldn't be able to do his best.

Derek Jeter uses a recording (when coming up to bat) of Sheppard announcing him.

Truth. My three favorite teams at any given time are (in no particular order) The Mariners (yeah they suck, but they're still my team), the Dodgers (go L.A.!), and whomsoever is playing the Yankees that day.

Mariners? Boy are you in for a long painful ride, with a team that has every resource available to them to be successful only to be thwarted at every turn by upper management incompetence and arrogance.

Here's a paraphrased statement by a fan that you may enjoy: "The Lincoln is a lemon with bad Armstrong tires."

Tell me about it. :(
