Star Trek Enhanced

Surefire

Overall, I'm happy with the Star Trek enhanced DVDs. The Enterprise (and other space shots) are vastly improved visually over the original series look. Planets shown from space look a lot more real, etc.

However, I don't see any improvement when action scenes on shore leave are shown. The hand phaser beams still look like undefined volume bars on 1980 TVs (think beams, no color variation in the edges and center). My initiial impression is that they did little to enhance the effects on scenes in which people are involved.

I am comparing it to the originals of the same episodes. Overall, I think this was a great purchase -- but I was expecting a bit more improvement especially in shore leave scenes. Anyone else have this reaction?

I'm not sure enhanced is the best term but it is much better than remastered.

I think that the new effects are not perfect, but it is interesting to see what has been done. What I really like is that both versions are available on the Blu-Ray.

I have always thought that we should refer these sets as TOS-R1 (as in revision one) because I could see the effects being redone again in another 10 or 20 years as computer effects become cheaper and better. I suppose fan revisions will start popping up on the internet as well.
