Can't talk about a design seen in an official trailer on CBS' website for "legal" reasons? That sounds like he's planting the seeds for an "out" to not use the design if fans hate it.

"Oh, turns out we couldn't get the rights, so legally we had to redesign from what you saw in that teaser"

I actually LOVE the ship design... possibly my favorite after Enterprise-D, TOS Enterprise (and, if it counts, the DS9 station)...!!!

Thinking about this some more, what if the U.S.S. Discovery seen in the teaser is a ship that was lost that is rediscovered post-Nemesis? What if that event destabilizes the Klingon/Federation peace? Maybe that's why they can't discuss the design - for a TMP era ship that is lost and then found they have plenty of options. This might be their first choice, but it may change to a different class if the legal can't be worked out. The "sports car" based designs could be post-Nemesis ships that find this U.S.S. Discovery.

According to IO9 Fuller was asked about Maquarrie and the design said he can't talk about either as legal is still working on it, so from the sounds of that we could have some pretty big changes yet depending on how the legal issues shake out.

Reading this again, the wording makes it sound like he can't legally say it is based on Ralph's design.

He can say "it is based off concept art from the 70's" but he can't legally say it is based off Ralph McQuarrie's art.

Don't really care which universe it's in, as long as the stories are good. And from the writing talent involved behind the scenes here, I'm really hoping they will be good. I'm pretty excited about this now. Beyond turned out to be a very pleasant surprise for me. I was worried, based on the first trailer. But the film was really good. I am excited for more Trek now. Bring it on!

I've always been a fan of that old McQuarrie design and I was nearly jumping out of my seat when I saw those lines.

I'm hoping the design and low registry number means we're in between TOS and the movies.

I like it. They improved upon the McQuarrie design.

Glad to see I'm not the only one getting a Klingon vibe off of it, though. Those who've guessed that it's set in the future with an old ship may be onto something.

I was more reminded of Romulan, actually.

I'm sure the final model will look awesome, I mean even Stargate Universe managed this 6 years ago, when CGI was presumably even more expensive - and more recently, Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome was also impressive in it's CGI, whilst being a cheap backdoor pilot.

Designs are cyclic. Retro is cool. And already plenty of connections to the evolution of "Phase II" and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". Looks great to me!

Let the fan moaning recommence. It is compulsory since TAS in 1973, dontcha know.

I'm assuming that since they aren't confirming the show's timeperiod that it's not straightforward Ent-to-TOS. My theory now is that it could be a 200 year old ship coming to the post-Nemesis era and finding themselves in a world where the Klingons are part of the Federation. They are stuck in a world were their prejudices have to be tossed out. This would explain the link thematically to The Undiscovered Country. It would also be a big let down to me because I'd hate for Pocket Books current post-Nemesis status quo to get dropped because of this show.

The books are the books - if you enjoy them then enjoy them. The TV show contradicting them doesn't make them disappear. You can still enjoy Best Destiny even though Generations contradicted it. You can still enjoy Federation even though FC/E contradicted it.

If you feel the need to connect everything to canon, you can always look to Lucy Lawless on The Simpson's - except instead of a wizard, it's a time traveller

There have been so many alternate universes presented in Trek and so many time travel episodes creating more alternate universes that even in TOS you could have branched universes a bunch of times.
