Let's hope it's something like that.
For people who are hating on the design, what if the Discovery is a literal piece of junk in-universe?
Fuller said he wants to keep the setting a surprise, so what if this is a post-NEM series where a Federation in ruins has to go back to the scrap heap and haul out this piece of junk from pre-TOS to help rebuild?
In that case, wouldn't you say Fuller and the people who designed the ship did a good job in portraying it as a "piece of junk"?
The rift in the Starfleet logo has to mean something.
I hope they work on the ship design a bit. It looks not so good. It just totally lacks any kind of elegance. I like the TOS or new movie design of the Enterprise much more.
OH so you won't subscribe but you'll watch some other way (presumably pirating since you specifically said subscribe which suggest that's your only legal way of saying it) because you don't like the aesthetic of a single prop, so you can enjoy finished the project but not pay for it or give counted views toward it because you don't like the design prop as you find it personally insulting. Gotcha. So much better.
I don't like the design either. I think it's ugly as hell. But you seem to be taking it as some kind of personal insult. It's not. Some people like different things.
If there is a enough negative feedback on the ship design they might change some of it, probably not in time for the first season (they'll want feedback from people watching it, not before), but perhaps the second season.
Then again, they didn't do anything to the NX-01. But Discovery has different producers and that.
This is a really great looking modern take on the original design http://lordsarvain.deviantart.com/art/New-Enterprise-WIP-058-181545745
Is it possible they're borrowing more than just the concept art from "Planet of Titans"? What if that's the plot (or part of it, or the backstory) for the first season, with the Discovery swapped in for the Enterprise?
I think this is plausible. Another exploration series a la TOS or TNG or even ENT would hardly be a "surprise." As to the registry, perhaps Starfleet decided that hitting six-digit registry numbers was silly and went back to four digits and this is set post TNG.
And I agree, the split Starfleet delta seems to indicate something - civil war, a rebuilding effort, etc.
Lots of possibilities. We won't know of anything for a while yet. I'm going to Fan Expo Toronto in Sep, I'm holding out hope Fuller will be there with some newly announced cast members since they're going to film there and they already have a big ST guest list
Boy is that disappointing! I've loved everything we've heard so far, and I love using the asteroid base - but man....that ship.....ugh! Even assuming it's preliminary, it's not an interesting or cool looking design at all. Discarding the similarity to the pre-TMP designs (which is hard to do), with CGI there are so many better designs that people have created in that era. Jeez, even the Star Trek Online TOS era designs are more creative, and they're not the best I've seen. Worse than that, the Kelvin timeline Enterprise is a design I've never liked, but it has grown on me unlike this design which I've seen for years in various forms and has always looked ugly. Eye of the beholder I know, but it really looks old.
I like it. They improved upon the McQuarrie design.
Glad to see I'm not the only one getting a Klingon vibe off of it, though. Those who've guessed that it's set in the future with an old ship may be onto something.
I like the name, USS Discovery was my go to name in many past Star Trek games, so that's fun for me.
I hate the design. Hate it. It looks like the offspring of the TOS Enterprise and a D7.
Can't wait for the show. Give us some great characters and story lines and I suppose I'll forgive the triangle starship. But it'll be a steep hill to climb to make me care about that ship.
*edit: As a bit of a redeeming feature, assuming the show is pre TOS or around that time, take one of the ship classes that were mentioned but never shown, apply it to the Discovery, and add in some missing canon.
Thank heavens the "race car spaceship" crap was just a ploy to throw us off. The Discovery is flippin' SWEEEEEET! Watching it the second time, it really does seem like there is a huge Klingon influence.
I hope no more Klingons. I've had my fill from TNG and DS9.
I hope not. I'm looking forward to a show that of course will have some drama, but also one that doesn't have a constant battle whether it be with the enemy of for survival.
Too bad it isn't premiering on September 8th 2016..
An old ship in the future would make sense considering they're launching from inside an asteroid. Ships are built in the atmosphere or shipyards, an asteroid indicates they're on the run or hiding from something or someone.
I am supremely pumped about the new series. The Discovery only made me MORE excited.
Sure, it's not the best looking ship we've seen, but this early in the timeline we are bound to run into some rather ugly designs. I mean, isn't it likely that the earlier in the timeline we go, the uglier the ships will get? Primitive technology, and all that.
(A lot of fans slammed the NX-01 to no end because they thought it looked too good, now they're ragging on the Discovery for being too ugly. Can't have it both ways!)
Definitely not liking the Discovery design, looks like a Constitution and a D7 loved each other very much :P
Maybe the story and acting will be great, hope so.
I was wondering if we aren't seeing an "Yesterday's Enterprise" type plot spread out over and entire year? Ship comes forward in time and the universe is completely screwed up.
