Star Trek: Discovery: Aggravated that CBS will charge us

So... it should be free/broadcast on normal TV, because previous series were? Or because you want it that way?

We're lucky we're getting any Star Trek on the small screen. Now you want to complain about it's method of delivery?
@TheSublimeGoose your avatar was pretty much my reaction while reading Refuge's comment........

Okay, last post here.. It occurs to me what an utter waste of time this last week or so has been. Analysing the show, trying to get into it. Even ostracised for two days. The hyperbole and theatrics, the angst over this and that and the hypocrisy over a different this and that, the pigeon holing and for what? Seriously is Discovery not going to be normal TV? Let's get it clear what normal TV is for a drop kick, ordinary 'lady' like myself is. It is check your TV guide and see Discovery listed on a local channel and then tune in and watch. No it doesn't mean sign up for unlimited downloads from an Internet Provider and then a Netflix subscription. If the other Star Trek productions were free TV then this one should be too. If it is that obscure that it can't be supported by a series of adverts trying to sell insurance policies to Baby Boomers and cheap loans to Generation Give me a Credit Card I don't Have to Pay Off, then it is a very sad day for the franchise.

Wow. Good luck with it.

Backs out now..

Contemporary media consumption has undergone a paradigm shift. I don't watch broadcast TV. I prefer the convenience of watching something on-demand according to my own schedule, instead of having to arrange my schedule around a broadcast time set by some corporate entity.

And to me, the fact that the show will be on a paid service is a sign that it will be a step above the last couple of Trek shows. There is a marked difference between shows that air for free, and shows that you have to pay for.

The millennials at work will be watching it for free. For them everything is "free" on Kodi. They were shocked a woman was taking her kids to the movies to see Beauty and the Beast. They were like you know you don't have to pay for movies anymore they just release them for free on Kodi. Yup everyone is making everything for free now.

Where's the aggravated at the complaining thread?? :barf::ack::thumbdown: Oh wait, there is one...

We've all been over ways to save a few bucks if that's a problem since the show was announced. There are many ways to do so with cable and satellite, and even a way to see a minimum of the first two episodes of the show for free (3-hours worth)

RAMA

It is telling that the OP blitz-posted three inaccuracy-riddled complaints about having to pay for the show, but never come back to acknowledge the responses to the misconceptions that were originally presented.

I'm a millenial and I don't subscribe to that mentality.

Kodi isn't on a forty-foot screen. Movies are supposed to be freakin' BIG.

I'm a millennial and I have no idea what Kodi is. And I don't pirate stuff.

Maybe it's, y'know, not a generational thing but just a problem in general? Maybe?

Just checking into the thread again. I'm glad to read these responses because it seems so many 20-30 something's here in the northeast US are all about jail broken firesticks with Kodi. Everyone is selling them on social media and they just love how free it all is. Don't get that these are The nowadays equivalent to cable tv descrambler boxes from back in the day and that they are stealing.

Wanna buy some fire sticks?

In England it's on Netflix, and I've been wanted an excuse to get Netflix for years. So I'm good :)

Kinda sucks if you're in the US or Canada and are buying a subscription to a service JUST to watch Discovery.

Already been debated. I'm either paying CBS AA or paying for Blu-Ray off-season etc. Either way it is about the same cost.

Or that TV shows actually cost money to produce and that stealing basically is ensuring that less and less product will be made.

I'll pay for it or I won't watch it, simple as that. I haven't seen a frame of GoT, aside from promo clips or interviews, because I won't pay for it. And I don't care about ads. I let them play on my YT videos and listen to the radio. Ads bother me about as much as sales tax.

As far as cost goes, I just dropped nearly $50 (US) on the Roddenberry Vault Blu-ray and $42 on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack LP.

$5.99/$9.99 a month is a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to what I've spent on Star Trek over the years.

This is such outdated thinking, its not the 90s anymore, trying to apply 60s, 80s or 90s thinking about media to today is futile.

Today, people will judge a streaming service on the strength of its library and just saying Star Trek cost more the past is meaningless, it does not make CBS All Access a better service.

I have no problem with Star Trek being a streaming service, I just wish it was on a better streaming service and saying CBS may become better in 4 years due to Star Trek, does not help anyone who has this service now.

CBS All Access needs more then Star Trek to be competitive and they have to get into gear or get left behind, because Netflix has a big head start and is not limited to solely to CBS related shows.

Aren't we in the early stages of that? CBS has to know they're behind is the streaming game, and that streaming is the future. They have to start somewhere.

Except what are they doing to dramatically increase the size of their library?

Netflix makes new stuff all the time and makes deals with big companies like Disney to increase their library, meanwhile CBS can't be bothered to combine the CBS and Showtime streaming services.

CBS is hand cuffing themselves, it doesn't seem like they are putting their best effort forward.

Oh, bullshit. This is their foray into streaming world. They actually have to start somewhere, and All-Access actually has a pretty sizable catalogue.

I paid for Netflix streaming back when they had next-to-nothing to offer (and no new series themselves). Growing a brand takes time.

Okay, then why don't they combine the CBS and Showtime streaming services into one service?

How varied is their library? Is it just filled with middle of the road network shows or do they have movies, kids shows and edgy cable shows?

I am not crying about anything, I am criticizing what I think is a bad business plan that may hurt this show and I think talking about how expensive Star Trek was in the past holds no bearing on the present.

If they can get people to pay for two distinct services, why wouldn't they? But, they still collect fees from cable companies, I imagine they wouldn't be too happy if folks could get two services they offer for a cheap price.

Their catalogue is made up of their shows, and the Paramount/CBS back catalogue right now. But, as we are all aware, new shows are coming that are for the streaming service.

Sure it does. I'd be pretty hypocritical to start complaining about paying for Star Trek now, when I've been paying for it in one form or another for the last four decades.
