Where exactly was it indicated that the surviving Kelvans gave StarFleet the necessary info to actually get back through the barrier.
Especially since they didn't make it through unscathed the first time and the fact that taking on a humanoid form was debilitating as far as they were concerned.

After 900 years.. And kelvins helping.. No one has crossed the barrier? BS!!
72 hours for Earth and Nivar? There 16 Lightyears apart... Dma .. 5!... Ughhh... So much crap..
So much crap...
16 light years for a 5 ly across anomaly that can jump hundreds of light years in an instant. There's a reason why I was frustrated they made it so large.

The Kelvans were not the only ones to cross the galactic barrier. The beings who created the androids in "I, Mudd" were from the Andromeda Galaxy and they probably had the knowledge on how this was done. Then, there was the extragalactic probe encountered by the USS Greyhound. ("The Naked Now") Another ship that came from another galaxy was the planet killer from "The Doomsday Machine".

The fact that there were starships exploring extragalactic space in the 24th century either indicated that Milky Way citizens learned on their own how to get through the barrier or acquired the knowledge from those who did so successfully or a combination of both.

The second DMA has been described as being more powerful than the first, so it supposedly has greater destructive power.

It sounds like from the episode that the DMA will land between Earth and Ni'Var. So, what else would be impacted by this thing? So, I looked at the map from Picard. The inhabited systems of Tau Ceti (Kaferians) and Procyon (Andorians) would feel the impact of this thing as well.

It sucks that this wasn't a better episode. A better episode would have gotten my mind off what is happening in Europe.

The thing is a mining device there's no reason to believe that it would drift through an area at a constant speed.
It would travel at what ever speed necessary to gather the material available then move on.

Hat in my hand moment.

I just watched it again and liked it much more than the first time. Maybe it was caffeine or just plain, simple impatience, but during the second time, with all the pressure off to get the GB, I was able to slow down and get into the moments proper resulting in a much better, classic even, Star Trek experience.

I got chills comparing the DMA to today's world events. Oros and Tarka's story was an emotional gut punch.

Glad I had not voted yet cause I am raising it to 8.5

I recommend everyone who felt like I did to try it again, see if it doesn't play better the second time.

If people are still reading the Illiad after over 2,000 years, I don't think it's that hard to believe people will be familar with Gilligan's Island in the 32nd Century. It's going to be a lot easier to preserve media now that it had been at any other point in history.

Are you comparing the Iliad to a line from an opening theme song for a campy 1960s tv show?

It would be a bold move, and IMHO correct insofar as it would make the Federation finally "move beyond" its founding worlds.

That said, destroying the Earth in the far future would piss off a huge section of Trek fandom, who would (for some asinine reason) decide that a "bad ending" invalidates everything that came before. Much as there were many who complained the "no Federation" at the start of Season 3 implied that the whole thing was futile.

So you mean the usual crowd that already ARE pissed off....no surprise there.

Shakespeare was a fan of penis jokes. We venerate him today. What is considered lowbrow humor can sometimes gain more legitimacy over time. Certainly, "Gilligan's Island" isn't high art, but it's pop culture, and that tends to have legs if its pervasive enough. In this brave new world of the 32nd century, it may be used to break the ice, especially if one is being sent on a wild goose chase thought to be a three hour tour.

;)

So..
TOS.. 3 times in the barrier..
1. They didn't get through and the ship was trashed and some crew went psycho loco.

2nd. Kelvin get through but trash ship, but enterprise goes out and comes back in no problem.. Without programmable antimatter.

3rd. Insane man takes the ship into the barrier .. And stays there for an extended period of time with no mention of imminent destruction. Till the medusan gets them out.

So 900 years latter with infinately better shields and everything else.. Doesn't last a few minutes.. And no one has apparently gone through since.. Ugh.. No

Another episode that exceeds the season average.

I liked how they expanded on the (admittedly weird) lore of the Galactic Barrier. I thought the tension between Burnham and the President was good. I dig Saru and the Na’Var President. I loved the Tarka backstory stuff. They still need more Vance.

I also dig the slower pace. I’m a slow-burn man.

8/10 this week. Good trend with the last two episodes.

The entire concept of a deadly and mysterious barrier surrounding the galaxy is, in itself, entirely preposterous (and yet compelling all at the same time).

I think we are waaaaaay deep into “just go with it” territory with the properties, purpose, and consistency of the concept.

It will all be ok.
