This series is getting worse by the week. It actually peaked in the 2nd episode, and that's only because Michael wasn't the centre of the universe once again. But she still had to be the one that saved the day despite being onscreen for 2 minutes. I really hope this is the final ever season of this series. Time for the people running Trek these days to put their efforts into the Pike series.

Yeah, you only hated that one...:rommie:

An extremely well written review by Anthony from trekmovie:
https://trekmovie.com/2020/11/26/review-star-trek-discovery-comes-together-in-unification-iii/

This part made me laugh:
As for Gabrielle, turns out this candor stuff does not mix with attorney-client privilege, as she tells the trio of judges Michael cannot be trusted, is a former mutineer, was just demoted for insubordination, and is being used by the Federation as Spock’s sister. Not even an open court Burnham-ific speech can convince mom of her true intentions. Worst. Lawyer. Ever.

And multiple meanings of episode title were nicely captured:
“Unification III” delivered on the title’s promise as a sort of sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “Unification” arc. And as that two-part episode brought back Leonard Nimoy as Spock, those were big Vulcan shoes to fill. But this episode and that title had meaning beyond following up on the Vulcans and Romulans. We saw unifications throughout, most importantly Michael’s reunion with her (real) mother, leading to her finding a way to unify her drive for duty and the call of love. We also saw a union of the crew and their preferred new (acting) first officer, and a wayward planet potentially returning to the flock. It’s nice when an episode can maintain a theme like this.

Dr. Burnham suddenly becoming a Qowat Milat was just a way to force her into the Ni'var forum. Literally nothing about her character in the last episode suggested she'd be the type to join such a group. She's a Federation scientist. If anything, it seems more likely she'd ditch the Qowat Milat and join Discovery to catch up with her daughter, and continue her science work as a Federation scientist on board.
She went from 31, of all things, to absolute candor XD

Apparently nobody has heard of an Honorary Degree
Those have no real meaning or power, a FO does

They can do both. And they are going to do both.

Win-win:beer:

Yet it was made pretty clear why this was the way to go in this case.

The Americans are so used to lawyers distorting facts, telling half-truths, using the system and technicalities that they can't conceive that another system may exist. For instance, there is no use in France to get up and yell "objection" or try to disrupt a witness' testimony because the judge is the one in charge of the procedure. So our courts are less agitated and dramatic than yours, which is probably why courtroom dramas are not as popular here as they are in the USA. But don't worry the judges are kept in check too so that it doesn't change anything about the fairness of the trial.

So just stop watching then......

Hey, for all the people complaining about Burnham...

Let me put it to you another way: Book likes Burnham. Book is pretty cool. Deep down you know this even you don't want to admit it. Book is cool. Are you telling me Book has no taste?

The all female thing smacks of being religious though, unless Romulan females have some inherent physical advantages in Qowat Milat fighting styles that we haven't heard about yet.
You can have traditions that do not come with a religious background. Also, they broke it quite easily in Picard, that might be not so uncommon as far as we know.

I absolutely agree, I view Discovery as being the Star Trek Roddenberry wanted to make but couldn't because of the restrictions of the time.
No way.
They finally show Burman and Book in bed and they’re using L-shaped sheets? Not even a peek at her? That’s clearly against Gene’s vision.

Admiral Vance is testing the character of the crew. He told Saru to offer Tilly the position to see how the rest of the crew would react. Stamets reacted normally, in a very upset manner initially.

However, Vance's dismissive attitude towards Adira Tal is hurting him now. Adira told Stamets that she remembers from Admiral Tal's memories that Vance often uses this ploy to test the character of the crew. Note Stamets' sudden change of attitude and quickly letting the rest of the crew in on the plot, showcasing their "supportive" manner and foiling Vance's plan to try to get the crew to act like jerks.
This is likely more sensible than what we’ll actually get.

I never minded it, as it made sense for the 22nd, 23rd, and even 24th centuries to have a human-majority Starfleet. But everything we know about the 32nd century Starfleet (Earth is not a Federation member, there ought to be a large amount of hybridization going on per Enterprise, and Starfleet is hidden away with very little warp capability) points towards a Starfleet that should be human-minority.

It'd be okay if Vance was an exception, or better yet, Willa the exception. But Vance and Willa, and more than half the Captains we meet, all appear Human.
Earth is no longer in the federation, but many earth colonies might be.

They're all changelings. The Dominion joined the Fed centuries ago. Have you ever seen Vance bleed?

They took a form the Discovery crew was comfortable with when their scans showed Discovery was mostly manned by humans
What if there was no programmable matter...!

he tried to kill her before starting to like her, though. ;)

Heh ... I think at this point...
Only Michael knows what Book tastes like. :nyah:

Try and imagine Tilly reading Riker's lines in the turbolift with Shelby after she went to Picard behind his back. The XO has to be the bad ass and deliver the bad news so that the captain doesn't have to. She's scared of a cat.

I know zero about military functions but I'm guessing there are a lot of different possible ways an "XO" can interact with the crew, and with the captain.

And I think the Qowat Milat would be a good place for Georgiou.

The worst XO has to be Michael. What could be worse than mutiny and getting your captain killed?

Doing nothing and the captain dies anyway.

The mutiny was definitely bad. anyway you look at it. Micael behaved like a crazy person. Trying to capture whatshisface alive was iffy at best. You'd think that as a Klingon fanatic he would have preferred death a million times to capture. So the only way you could force him would be to stun him and get his ass beamed to what was left of the ship (what was the name of that ship again?). Anyway, she shouldn't have neck pinched her Captain (so badly that she woke up thirty seconds later at that), and given orders the way she did, no matter the circumstances. It's amazing that having witnessed that Saru still made her his XO!!!

There were 2 big questions/discussions this week on social media. Who will be the new #1? and was Michael going to leave?

The first one always had a comment from someone that Saru should choose Tilly. That comment was universally shot down for all the reasons Tilly clearly communicated to Saru when he offered the position to her. I've loved the Tilly character and Mary Wiseman's acting from the start. Sometimes she comes across as "to Tilly" but that is what it is. But this choice by Captain Saru and the ultimate acceptance by the crew just reenforces that this writing staff really doesn't understand military structure and rank. It's all about feelings. (family, togetherness) It's not like Saru doesn't have any options. Discovery isn't alone anymore. There has to be a commander in Star Fleet that could have served. That was my druthers. I thought bringing someone from outside the crew was probably the right choice now that Nhan was gone and Reno was basically the only choice left. An LT IMO was too junior for the #1 position, but I would have accepted the choice LONG before choosing Tilly. This is making me root for some redemption arc with Michael so she can earn back the #1 position. I guess the only light at the end of the tunnel here is that Saru asked her to be "acting" 1st officer until be can find a replacement. Saru's worst decision... Tilly is the most junior and least experienced member of Discovery's crew. Hell, Adira would have been a better choice.

Ni'var... interesting... The Vulcans and Romulans have "united". (kind of expected with the episode title) One wonders if it happened as Spock foresaw, or it was kicked into gear with the destruction of Romulus. I might side with the latter as it seems Ni'var has many different strongly opinionated factions.

I have to admit, I was not expecting to see Michael's mother here. I liked it though. Michael probably isn't successful in gaining the SP19 data without her. I have to admit, I choked up when Michael brought up Spock speaking about his reunification efforts. Not just because seeing Leonard, but remembering Michael and Spock's relationship too) This "A" story was a very good one. No technobabble answer. A real "come to Jesus" moment for Michael. (at the hands of her mother) I was surprised when she put the well-being of Ni'Var ahead of the needs of the Federation. I thought it played well and was in keeping with some of the finest Star Trek we have. Michael's self-discovery here is probably her strongest character development moment to date.

I'm glad she is staying on Discovery instead of making this search out on her own. I'm also glad it appears that Book will be remaining onboard.

One sad note that is we didn't gain any insight into Georgiou's situation.

How does one rate this episode? We have both ends of the spectrum here... an outstanding "A" story flanked by the incomprehensibly stupid Tilly promotion.

7 for me. (6.5 if I could have chosen that)

Maybe because she learned a couple things and still demonstrated leadership capability despite a perchance for bending and breaking the rules?

Michael behaved like a crazy person, yes. She was reexperiencing a traumatic moment, and was willing to take her punishment, despite Klingons wanting war no matter what, so that's not on her. However, Lorca's machinations made it possible for her to encounter her demons and fight past her harsh feelings towards Klingons and work to move past her guilt over Georgiou (not fully past that obviously).

No,she shouldn't have done the mutiny. I don't know anyone who thinks that was a good idea, thus far (I'm sure I'll be proven wrong). But, that doesn't mean she can't become better.

Pretty sure that's the ethos of Trek...something, something...evolved.
