While I agree with you that this is not a Covid reference, it wouldn't be impossible...a re-write could have happened as Covid first was known to the world in Nov/Dec 2019, hence the "19". The show had 3+ months of filming at that point.
But why would you do that? It meant nothing, at least in the US, until much later. Without the hindsight that we have, it would be a very odd reference to make in December or January last year.

And do Vulco-Romulans mate once every 7 years or go at it every weekend like Marek and Soji. Not sure show well Vulcan men would get on with some of the kinky Romulan women we have seen

Well, you only have to look at the way the president threw herself at Saru when he asked if they could keep in touch. Unification 3? More like Vulcan Love Slave 3.

Any apparent connection between the pandemic and the show hinges on the use of the number “19.” I can’t see this as anything other than pure coincidence. When was the script of 3x07 actually written...?

The official names COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 were issued by the WHO on 11 February 2020. Prior to that, the temporary name 2019-nCov was given in Jan 2020.

Given everything else that was going on, is it reasonable to assume that there would be script re-writes and pickup shoots just to include this?

Honestly, let’s stay well clear of Q-Anon territory, shall we...?

Ha! “Maybe you’d like to give me your new TriCom Badge number Captain? Has anyone shown you what happens when you swipe left or right...?”

And like it or not, giving the position to Supporting Character 03 simply based on seniority wouldn't have had the same emotional impact. Saying that this would give the writers more opportunities to flesh out, let's say, Nilsson... why should they? Why would they need to focus on supporting and bit characters at all? Did Voyager feel the need to flesh out Joe Carey or Ayala? Did DS9 give Michael Eddington any personality at all before making him a Maquis infiltrator? They had twice as many episodes per season and still chose to limit whom to focus on.

There was another alternative - Vance could have assigned Saru an uptime XO. That arguably would have been a superior decision, insofar as it would introduce a (non-villainous) antagonist/foil into the mix, who would be more of a disciplinarian and step on the toes of the crew.

Not every promotion needs to be an "aww, you go girl!" reaction after all.

Also, could we please let go of this idea of Starfleet being the United States Navy? That ship has already sailed decades ago when Captains Kirk and Picard were allowed to date their own subordinates without any repercussions, crews were allowed to stay together for decades and crew members were allowed to take their families with themselves. Starfleet is, and has always been more like an unholy amalgamation of NASA, a research university and a diplomatic corps, usage of US naval ranks notwithstanding.

All of the examples you gave are still professional organizations which can be rife with their own interpersonal conflicts. While I'm enjoying Discovery this season, it kinda has a little too much of a "BFFs at a slumber party" or "group therapy session" vibe. I'm happy the show isn't edgelord any longer, but there's a middle step between the two of people who just act like professionals with one another.

This show would have worked well as an academy show aimed at teens like the new Walking dead or something.
You could have the Mammy issues science officer crying about boys to the insecure No.1 in their shared bedroom

Too much emotions and crying in the ep. I hope they tone that down a bit.

8/10

Some of us have been thinking this for a while now, so this episode felt like they doubled down on emotions and crying.

Having said that, a lot of the crying and emotions made sense for this particular episode, mostly relating to the Burnham family reunion. It just all felt diluted because that's all we seem to be getting now.

Kelvin Pike doesn't know anything about Prime Kirk. Kelvin Kirk is just some cadet no different than Tilly, and even has less experience than Tilly at the time. Who Kelvin Kirk's dad was is irrelevant to who Kelvin Kirk is and "destiny" etc. is something that has no place in Star Trek or Starfleet. This isn't Star Wars.
Plus in the JJ verse, Pike was fascinated completely by the USS Kelvin incident. That's one reason he was so interested in JJ Kirk as well.

It will definitely happen. Just look at how today everybody's ancestry can be traced to several different countries and imagine after a thousands years of interstellar colonization.
I’m saying not everyone will be mixed, not that there won’t be mixing. Even today there are people who’s ancestry is limited to one region. My mother has two ethnicities : Scots and English and both are on the same island.

I like that the coordinates of Spock’s log is still redacted in the 32nd century. It’s Romulus if you’re interested.
Starfleet probably didn't redact it. Jean-Luc Picard probably did. Remember that the computer stated it came from his personal archives. The other interesting thing is the computer stated it was the personal archives of Captain Picard. IE - somehow the fact he made Admiral was never recorded.

Edited to add: whoops; I stand corrected it (see below) as in the scene it was stated to be from the archives of Admiral Picard. My bad.

And how far back does this go? We’re talking or about 1200 years of interstellar mixing here...

i remember hearing admiral. Even so, he was captain when that recording was taken.

Definitely admiral.

Does anyone else get fed up with Burnham's breathy speeches and brimming eyes with nearly every line of dialogue? She's always awestruck or whispering in reverence, spouting some saccharine bs. Just once, I'd like her to talk like a normal person. Could hardly bear to watch her stuff lately and kind of forward through most of it.

Of all the crew, to me, she's the least likeable, and considering she's the star, for me at least, it's a drawback. I gave this episode 6/10 but I don't know how much more of Burnham I can take!
The speeches written for the character of Michael Burnham are so far overall much better than the hypocritical "The Federation is always right" diatribes delivered by Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard during the entire run of TNG. YMMV.
