A thought...

That's what the show is going to be about.

Burnham's not going to become captain of the Discovery. No, she's going to become President of the Federation.

Oh boy will some heads explode.
No - she won't want that level of responsibility - she'll hand that title off to Booker, or the Starbase Commander she first met. ;)

In that case, I really hope that there actually will be an election, she'll be running against Georgiou, and we will get to follow the entire campaign, complete with debates, town halls and Burnham-trademarked speeches at various iconic Trek locations. Tilly could volunteer to be her campaign manager, because there's no way that would go wrong. Let an entire season be about nothing but that

If they're going back to Earth next episode, I wonder if we'll get a peek outside the walls of Starfleet Command? Maybe we'll get to see a 32nd century winery or soul food restaurant?

The Aditya Sahil 3190 campaign starts today...

EDIT: And his campaign slogan...

Like the Obama poster...

HOPE.

I don't think I even said the rating I gave this episode. I'll give it an 8.

Would've been a 7, but the Discovery crash and the Georgiou/Zareh fight bring it up. This is a visual medium and DSC always makes good use of it. Location footage in particular is always something this series excels at.

The western plot gets talked about a lot; but the portions on Discovery, when the ship is trapped underneath the parasitic ice, feel like a Disaster Movie. You could've had an episode with just that and really upped the tension.

Giving it an 8 also. I have a feeling there are some great things to come.

I would imagine some words from various languages have crossed over into Federation Standard/English, but there would be plenty of examples of words and whole phrases that it would be improbable to have crossed over. A few off the top of my head:

It would have been awkward in TNG when Picard was trying to boost the spirits of the children he was with in Disaster if the UT translated "Brother Jack, are you sleeping"

In TNG's "Lower Decks," Worf tries to get Ensign Sito to realize that she was being treated unfairly for her past transgressions by making up a Klingon test that he labels in Klingon something like "battle to the death." The UT doesn't translate the name of the ritual into Standard, and Sito only belatedly puts togehter the true meaning of the phrase after she realizes the real lesson. When she confronts him about it, he's like, "Ah, you speak Klingon."

Anyway, didn't mean to start a long digression. Just noting that the UT is taking a coffee break when all this pidgin is being used.

Well, we always have to figure a fudge factor with the UT since translated characters can be seen to be speaking the translated language. What we see on screen can't be real in-universe.

Maybe Saru and Tilly had their translators off because everyone had been speaking English until then? Not actually using a UT at the moment could explain the other examples too.
