I think there is potential there, but I struggle with it at the same time. Largely because passage of time is something Trek really struggles with and what kind of changes could potentially occur, especially in a new environment.

So, more powerful, but probably poorly handled.

I'd have probably had something like a ten year gap. So Burnham could really have a hold of the type of universe she inhabits and how it would affect her.

ie: a figurehead?
Not necessarily...there are several levels of power between “powerless figurehead” and “center of the political scene”.

He is the Commander in Chief according to DS9. While the CiC in ST6 appeared to be a Starfleet officer.
It’s been many years since I’ve seen Homefront, but I seem to remember that the president was definitely not in charge of Starfleet, in fact they needed him to authorize Starfleet operating on earth as police force and eventually declare martial law.

agree with a lot of what you say, however Sir Patrick Stewart at the height of his X-Men work noted a lot of similarities between the TNG characters and the X-Men and even said something like characters from one series would fit quite easily in the other (can't find the link now sorry).
I clearly remember a several pages long comparison carried out in a number of one of the Star Trek magazines, say early 00s.

it depends on what kind of story they want to tell. I, for one, can’t wait to find out more tomorrow!

I gave the first episode a high 8 and the second episode a low 8. Oh no! Definitely a downward trend.

I'm sure we'll have all kinds of Short Treks focusing on the time leading up to 3188-'89.

Do you think there's the potential for 6 Discovery only shorts now that SNW is on it's own (eventually)? Not that I would mind seeing some SNW material before the series drops.

It was, which is why I hope it stabilizes and doesn't continue to dip lower.
I mean, it probably will I figure. Most streaming shows (for me) hit a dip middle of the season at some point. Seems to be the nature of the beast. But, my watching is also highly limited so that might just be me.

I think because they're setting up a whole new era from scratch, they'll want to use the Short Treks to show us more of the 32nd Century if it doesn't fit into the story this season of Discovery is telling. Whereas with Strange New Worlds and Picard, they don't have to set up a whole new era.

We'll probably get more Short Treks than 6 only because 2021 is going to be such a light year for Star Trek.

We're nearing 2021 and still haven't heard anything on that front. Might just be Short Treks doesn't have the appeal the other shows do and might be on the back burner.

They're quicker to make, less expensive to produce. Bet you they'll come up with something. DSC Season 4 is the first one going into production and that's in November. I don't see us getting a season premiere before the beginning of 2022. I'd be surprised.

That creates a vacuum. It makes more sense to have more Short Treks than not. But I don't know. I don't have their offices bugged.

I think we'll see Discovery season four around the same time we did this year (they are only doing ten episodes vs. thirteen, IIRC). Plus, there will be Lower Decks season two, and Prodigy season one on Nickelodeon. That would represent thirty weeks of programming.

I'd be surprised if we see Short Treks in 2021.

we might also get Picard season 2 in late 2021.

Still, I think we’ll get some Short Treks: they’re cheap to make, vehicle for nice little stories and relatively popular, so why not?

Are you going to get all the people together during a pandemic for something that likely doesn't draw subscribers to the service? Some were good, some weren't, but I don't think anyone is really going to miss them if they aren't made for 2021. They are something nice to have if you are already a subscriber, but aren't going to make or break the service.

As far as Picard goes, doesn't it start filming after Strange New Worlds? If so, that'll put it squarely in 2022.

We'll get Season 2 of Lower Decks in 2021 for sure.

I'm sure Prodigy will be great, but I haven't watched a show on Nickelodeon in 30 years.
