"Dismayed" is probably strong, but I'm just a confused and at a loss as to how people are so vibrant about this show and thinking it's so great. Watching it, and then watching through the second episode of the season I just see nothing to like or that is recognizable.

And that's fair. But, what does that mean for the franchise as a whole if people like it?

Is the worry that Trek has changed?

I was sick of the Old Thing (meaning the Berman Era) even as the Old Thing was ending. So I stopped watching, moved on to watching other things, and also focused on the earlier Trek that I did like (see the first several years I posted here). When Star Trek came back to TV, I liked the New Thing enough (meaning the Kurtzman Era) that it sucked me back in.

It's that simple.

Simple. People like different things than you do, and get different things from previous Star Trek than you. Some people like the utopian ideals. Some like the morality plays. Some like characters. Some like sci-fi adventure. Some like starship porn. Some like some my mix of these. But obviously Disco fans liked different things about Star Trek than you. And that's ok. The correct answer is, "Wow, this version of Star Trek isn't for me, but I'm really glad you guys have a show you enjoy." The Orville isn't for me, but I don't begrudge the people who like it, I'm happy they found a show that works for them.

As someone who has watched star trek since the age of 8 i find plenty to like in Discovery. Different strokes for different folks bro.

Okay, sorry for the old thread bump, but I’m finally catching up on the old Nu Trek.

Holy crap, this was a damn fine episode. Yeah the shootout with Cosmo and all that was a bit lame — but everything else was so good. Beautifully shot, great acting, and with a surprisingly refreshing sense of humour.

I got tingles with the final scene where they raise the Federation flag. 9/10 for me. Please tell me the rest of S3 is this good.

I can tell you that some of S3 is this good at least!

Personally I really liked this episode and thought these first few stories were the best part of the season but the Trek BBS polls say the best is yet to come. And the worst.

agreed: this and the follow episode we’re among the best of discovery.
This also stands out as possibly the episode with the most realistic hand-to-hand fight choreography Star Trek ever did.
