would be surprised because people continue to use sailboats in the future
BTTF3, 1885: Do people in 1985 still walk? - We do walk, for fun. - What the hell is so funny about walking?!

I thought the reason it could only be dilithium is it doesn’t react with antimatter.
AM is isolated by containment fields and special storage pods far away from the reaction chamber, where the dilithium is.

I wonder if the Discovery will finally arrive in episode 2 or later. I hope it's next episode.
Yup, it's like Spock and Nero in STXI: They didn't go in at the same time, so they don't come out at the same time.

"In reality, dilithium (Li2) is a molecule composed of two covalently bonded lithium atoms which exists naturally in gaseous lithium."
I got a real kick out of that when they mentioned it specifically in 1st semester chemistry!

He wasn't waiting for anyone specific. Just someone from the Federation/Starfleet.
Don't know how often that happens given how Book thinks the true believers are a lost cause and a little goofy (maybe Book is an outlier), but I figure it does happen regularly. Even given his level of dedication, no one could sit around for 40 years doing absolutely nothing.
That Federation outpost must have one impressive holodeck if the guy never wanted to leave.
He probably gets true believer visitors (=Trekkies!) who show up in old uniforms with old badges and wanna hear stories about what it was like. Why else would he even get up every morning and brush....no, lightwave his teeth every day XD
But I'm sure he was watching 3188's version of youtube or played a game until he saw someone's coming, then he quickly cleaned up his desk XD
I do wonder though why he seemed to be able to scan the whole galaxy in the beginning and then said long-range sensors don't work anymore and he can only see a few sectors.

Yes.
They never said warp drive was impossible, just that most of the dilithium in the galaxy just, exploded.
It's like suddenly having to hold zoom meetings and 90% of flights being grounded ;)

There were many in Italy and France in the 600s who still believed they were living in the Roman Empire even though the western empire had been gone since 476. They still spoke Latin, used Roman money and had local Roman governments. Seems like that’s where they’re going with the 32nd century Federation.
There are quite a few Germans who insist the Empire still exists and the Republic is an illegitimate 'company' only. They print their own invalid passports and some of them claim to be the emperor.

Until today many people keep the religion of the Romans (Christianity)
And we named planets, rockets, and space programs after Roman gods...

Star Wars. That's the one with the guy in all black who has the breathing problem right? :p
It's the one where knights save the princess with their sabers.

Orions and Andorians make for wacky partners in crime. We need a zany sitcom about an Orion and an Andorian who decide to break into the criminal underworld and all their slapstick adventures.
Shran's wife/partner was Orion, I think

one of the reasons why I like star trek is because they try to give realistic and logical explanations to what we see on the screen
At least they used to...

I got kind of emotional when he was talking about that flag.
Best moment in the first two episodes!

I would prefer that they create a state called the Republic of Plants and that includes something of the territory of which it was once the federation.
Run by the Phylosians!

When Michael inevitably restores the Federation, the Andorian-Orion Alliance thingy might be like, "Wait, aren't we the Federation?"
Then the Fesarius shows up and says: We were first!

That means they'd have to talk about Earth's status in the 32nd century. And I'm not sure they will talk about Earth. They might go back to the TOS style of things where Earth was unnecessarily mysterious and never mentioned.
I think the Earth-like planet that they're so happy to see in the season preview is Earth, and it's gonna be in the episode called Terra Firma or something like that ;)

So what is with the overlap between Trek story points?
- Riker shows up to save the day in the finale of Picard and in Lower Decks
- Boimler and Burnham both get gummed on by "monsters" in their respective series premieres
I think there needs to be a little more communication between series
I don't think there's a miscommunication, but LD paying homage to the Picard S1 finale and to DSC with the creature sucking Burnham. Remember, DSC was supposed to air before LD but post-production was delayed due to covid and thus the Boimler scene ended up referencing an episode that hadn't aired yet... I suspect.

Watched it again and would raise my 7 to an 8 or 9.

But - you’re stranded on a random planet with no immediate sign of help. Why would you get rid of your magic super high tech still kind of working suit? The one with scanner and shields and subspace communication?

I know send Spock a signal. But really? Seems more important to have the capability.

She could also send that signal at any time. It’s a time machine

I gave that an 8. I'm so happy DIS is back.

I loved the new setting, and hearing the tales of woe the Federation endured. The bit at the end when Burnham finally met someone from Starfleet gave me goosebumps.

The six stars on the Federation flag look very lonely. :ouch:

I thought that as well, but she had promised the signal and it appears she thought that Discovery would be popping out right behind her........very wrongly. Plus she just hit the ground hard--lol.

Wasn't there a WHOLE THING about it only having enough power for a certain amount of jumps? If your phone is on 5% do you really want to wait a week or two to send that text message with all the photos and video?
I’m sure they could find more power. There’s no rush

Despite the common assumption/belief, Star Trekverse is not post-scarcity. Dilithium is THE scarcity and has already been shown to be as so before the pretense of it being so finite that it could all be destroyed. So until a near-infinite power source at near (or no) cost is achieved, then the search and development or evolution of power technology will continue.
in the 23rd century, yes, in the 24th they can just recristalize dilithium.

I'd be interested especially in the Romulans. They didn't use dilithium at least into the TNG era, but then things weren't going well for them either, last we looked.
I was wondering about that as well.

and it was nice (for once) to not be able to immediately see where all of it would go.
Can’t agree here. It was pretty straightforward for me. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I could have basically said almost exactly what would have happened in the episode ever since burnham landed.

Does anyone get a feeling that Disco season 3 is gonna to be similar to Andromeda. Basically, someone from the past, trying to restore a collapsed interplanetary union in the distant future.
Like everyone? Ever since a couple of episodes from S2 ending?
Not necessarily a bad thing either, if done well (which definitely wasn’t in Andromeda) the basic idea is very compelling.

That really confused me too.

Felt more like a spinoff launch than a season premiere, but was really good. I liked Book, even if he's too obviously parachuted in as a more relatable love interest for Michael, and Grudge. Cool trailer at the end. The worm thing reminded me of something from I'm not sure where but I think an old DWM comic strip. The slime beast in The Iron Legion maybe. Also had a near falling off the chair moment because Morn?!
