There was an awesome alien on the bridge during Tilly's meltdown. Had we seen that species before? Maybe in TMP? Or am I thinking of The Fly?
I know the one you're talking about, and I don't know if they're known species or not. We also got another brief glimpse of Linus the Saurian, and, of course, Saru.

I did see two Mants. Were there others?
As I mentioned as you were posting, we saw another brief glimpse of Linus the Saurian and Saru. that's three alien species in the crew in one episode. I'm not saying it's the first time it's happened, I'm saying it's the first time I've noticed it. Have we seen any biological Vulcans on the crew?

Anything that makes Starfleet/The UFP less of a Homo Sapiens only club is a good thing.

You do realize that what a number of people are objecting to here is the dull Klingon politics, something that TNG (and DS9) did in spades?

I don't think it was dull. I liked what they did. It wasn't to other people's tastes and that's fine. I also liked ongoing Klingon storyline from TNG/DS9. That's why I was defending the Klingons and their presence so much during the first season. Otherwise, I wouldn't have.

Life comes at you fast, like a severed fake baby head...

I give it an eight. I do feel like they're moving to make the Klingons a more worthy foe, like they were in TOS and the TOS Films. Aggressive yes, but also very clever, cunning and ruthless, a bit like Kor in TOS. Funny, L'Rell is mocked as a Federation puppet and ultimately she becomes one, admittedly under threat of violence. I feel the thing with the baby could go two ways: he spends the rest of his life as a monk, and we never see him again, or he returns in future in this show or another one. Both seem possible.

Also, we get to see a more traditional D7, although its fancied up with details from the K't'inga much like the Discoprise has features of the Connie refit. Maybe Starfleet will learn of this and be like "We got upgrade our Constitution class" ;)

The most interesting part of this episode to me was the multidimensional alien attached to Tilly. The advertisement for the section 31 show I could have done without.

Amanda seemed like she should have looked older. Hopefully the buildup around Spock ends up worth it.

I preferred the TNG/DS9 Klingon politics over the CW teeny-bopper drama we got with them on Discovery. The secret baby lovechild is definitely just a means to create major drama between Michael and AshVoq in the future. It was a CW soap opera plot, just much uglier.

TNG and DS9 did it from either a main character's perspective or the perspective of Federation seeking a certain result. If they had done an episode solely on Kronos about Gowron defending his title without any main characters around in TNG or DS9 it would have been just as weak but with better makeup.

I personally don't hold Discovery specifically at issue with the Klingon story. I skip all Klingon-centric episodes of TNG too. I skipped DS9 all together.

TNG's Klingon episodes were generally about Worf, and DS9's with the exception of the ones about Quark were about the Federation trying to make them not be morons enough to **** up the Dominion war.

Section 31 spinoff show was only announced now by the trades as a ploy by CBS to encourage investors and potential subscribers about the 'health' of STD and CBSAA.

It's the same scheme as when Paramount announced ST4 with Pine and Hemsworth during the week before Star Trek Beyond's release.

It's a classic studio or network PR move.

Whether the series actually happens is TBD.
