From screen canon it often seems like a large portion of humanity *was* wiped out outside of North America. So, maybe?

Based on your interpretation of screen canon the only states left in the USA are California, Iowa, Georgia and Louisiana. If its not on screen it does not exist right?

The odd thing is it's not always there. He seems to bounce around from Southwestern Virginia to Ohio. Very uneven performance in that regard.

If they don't establish him to have been born in my part of Virginia I'll boycott the show. Some things cannot and should not be tolerated, much less a Starfleet captain from Ohio.

What I don't understand is why he would leave his ship before self-destructing it. However, he could have had mission-critical intelligence which he was ordered to return to Starfleet. Sure, he could have left it in the care of a First Officer or something, but perhaps his hands were tied. If this is the case, he literally did nothing dishonorable as a captain.

I was thinking something along the lines of that season 2 episode of TNG where Picard was forced to abandon the ship because he thought it would direct the attention of the entity away from the rest of his crew (Time Squared I think was the ep name?)

It looks like alphabetical order. Just did a rewatch of this episode recently. I rather enjoyed it. I liked the dynamics between Lorca and Tyler, along with their conflict with Mudd. I also enjoyed how Burnham and Saru eventually made their peace with each other.
