I had a UFO Interceptor toy as a kid. If I recall, the nose missile was spring loaded and it could actually launch.
The Interceptor was a very cool looking design, but it made little sense in practical terms. One shot and then you were defenseless.
Actually, it's not as nonsensical as you might think,
if you consider the interceptor instead of fighter role.
In 1950's -60's air defense doctrine, an interceptor was not a general air superiority fighter. Instead, its role was to bring down enemy bombers at high altitude as they came in. The speed and altitude meant that they were only expected to get one firing pass.
