Star Trek Continues, Episode 4...

Why bother with expensive new sets and costumes? I'd be perfectly happy if they just ignored the movie continuity and pretended TOS never ended.
I'd be on board (so to speak) with that. Still loathe the TMP costumes with a passion.

While i hate the idea of ignoring the movie era onwards, A lot of people loathe several elements of TMP; story, costume, sets etc. I've grown to like it over the years*

Why not have TMP rewritten and made by STC as an episode? Maybe in an AU continuity where the series aesthetic stayed. It'll be interesting to see as a few fan fiction writers have tried reimagining it. What changes would the new script make - some elements from the p2 script In Thy Image could return. Would certain crew members have left for a while?

* = in a fan edit episode-length format!

I, for one, would be very intrigued to see something set soon after TMP. One could tweak the costuming a bit to make it more appealing (such as ditch the one-piece like Decker wore). It would be the road not taken because TPTB went TWOK route.
It would actually be more in line with what I had hoped would follow TMP: another 5-year mission.

Instead we got Trek: The Winding Down Years.

This would work; comics and books have used this idea; and yes if there are custom issues somehow they can be tweaked and start to transition into the Monster Maroons.

The gap between those first two movies is considerably large enough to explore and as a show it would be very close to TOS in style, just with more sophisticated sets/costumes.

Considering the amount of time open between TMP and TWOk I wouldn't bother with the maroon costumes. I can't stand those things and a young cast wouldn't have to worry about hiding middle age spread.

I quite like the monster maroons myself, and that would be an interesting era for Continues to attempt to portray - and would certainly make it distinctive from other stuff on the "market" so to speak.

Indeed, they are a popular uniform style! I love them.

I've found my tastes have changed over the years. I liked the maroons a lot at first, after the disaster of the TMP uniforms. Then we got the first TNG uniforms which were barely better than TMP, and well....

Luckily, the later uniforms looked better so the maroons lost favor, at least with me.

I'm not a fan of the marching band maroons either.

If they - the Continues people - decide to move onto other uniforms, I hope they kept the aestetic of the color-coded departments and also the skirt/pant option for ladies, etc.

Space exploration is supposed to be fun...not just cerebral.

Reading the first batch of novels from Pocket Books after TMP was released It was rather easy to accept many of them taking place within the new setting. And it would be three years before Meyer maroons would be seen. So it's easy to acknowledge 5-8 years of events with the TMP aesthetics.

I could see using the TMP uniforms but tweaking them just a bit in style and colour and ditching the unattractive ones (such as the one-piece jump suit). It could be rationalized as Starfleet making adjustments to the uniform line as time progressed (quite plausible given ease of manufacture). Also individual crew members could simply be opting to wear the uniforms they feel most comfortable in.

If TOS had continued it's a shame they never came up with a truly nice looking trouser alternative for the women to be seen periodically. The ones seen in "The Cahe" and WNMHGB were okay, but the version seen in early first season episodes didn't work that well aesthetically. I'm sure something better could have been devised

Isn't a version of the trouser uniform for women seen in Starship Exeter? Or is it Starship Farragut?

STC gives Dr. McKennah some sort of trousers/leggings to wear underneath the standard blueskirt.

Edit: I checked again and that's either just some black hose or very thin leggings.

I read your signature but I'm not going to change mine.

Ha! Fair enough :) It's just a silly joke on my part anyway.

Tweaking the TMP uniforms might be interesting, plus it would definitely make Continues visually distinctive if they were literally using unique uniforms designed for the production (but based on the TMP style). Having said that, wasn't one of their stated aims to make something "authentic" as a recreation? That being the case, using specially altered uniforms that have never really been seen might not be something they'd do.

I think using TMP uniforms (or TMP-based) amid TOS-era art design would be more incongruous than "visually distinctive."

Like I said ditch the one-piece. Also you'd have to have the new sets which would probably be too expensive.

For now I'm happy with them sticking to the TOS era.

THE HELL YOU SAY

I respect that, you are loyal to the show you grew up with :) In 50 years there is a lot of Star Trek that some prefer others don't :)

I for example grew up with TNG and Star Trek VI is my favourite - the last hurrah. I ignored the original 79 for some years and have only just started appreciating Enterprise properly. We all have different tastes. Just look at my profile picture, it's possibly blasphemy to some.
