Star Trek Continues, Episode 4...

I apologise I missed the last times, and I have seen the TAS episode but it was called something else.
I think they just called it the rec room in TAS.

At the rate STC is going, it's probably overly ambitious for them to "complete the 5-year mission," which would require a total of about 52 episodes finishing up with a 76-year-old Vic Mignogna. But if they make it to 30 episodes, STC and TAS together could make up the 2 missing years.

Yes--"Rec Room."

I'm sure they'll just recast the part eventually. Vic probably has another 5 years where he can be credible in the role. Chuck Huber probably has longer, since DeForest Kelley looked like he was 50 from birth until he passed away.

STC was partially created so Vic could play Captain Kirk, so I don't think he wants to give up the role. Ia think he'll go a bit longer than 5 years. I think he is the closest Kirk to the 60s show.

Chris Pine was good but apart from a similar look nuKirk is a virtually different character who has grown up in a different way.

Recasting Kirk and Spock was a taboo but it's now almost the norm! And I'm fine with that, you can separate the characters from the actors. James Cawley was probably the most different and took a few episodes to find his feet but I was used to him by World Enough and Time. Same with Jeff Quinn (then he left!) but I think Brandon Stacey is my favourite Spock after Nimoy. He just captured the part for me in look and performance I'm curious to see Brian Gross in a full episode and Jeff Bond as McCoy; I was a big fan of John Kelley's version (though I love Larry Nemecek).

I could put together a 'dream team' cast from Phase II/STC if you wanted? I think STC has kept it's promise with the 'accurate to the 60s show' thing though.

Mignogna himself has actually said he recognizes he has a shelf life playing Kirk.

On FB I often see remarks from posters who wish something could be done with CBS or Netflix to bring STC to television or some other regular series structure. But I think if that actually did happen there would be too much pressure to make certain changes and effectively ruin what STC is managing to do.

And while I really enjoy STC I don't think it would fly as an actual television series for today. It could find a niche audience, but that's not good enough for television. But it could perhaps serve as a basic template for a re-imagined TOS series.

Actually, niche audiences are the norm with television shows these days. You can't survive on a network station with a nice audience, but most well-regarded cable shows have very small audiences.

I still don't know if STC could survive on television today.

Not existing (subsisting?) on its current budget limitations, but the production values are good enough, and the acting for the most part is good enough. With a proper budget we might be surprised at what they could do.

Of course it will never happen, but some of this stuff is fun to think about.

I wish there were some way they could pick up the pace while Vic is still in the role. He's been the only non-Shatner Kirk I can believe in. :( But I'm fully aware that all these people are volunteers and they need to earn a living somewhere. :rommie:

All they would need to do to increase Vic's "shelf life" would be to jump to the movie era. And with the sister series, Farragut, already making sets and costumes for that era, it might not be outside the realm of possibility.

Oh my that would be brilliant; I love the movie era . It'd be a nice change from all the 5ym stuff.

I dunno; lots of long-running TV shows probably had plenty of nice people among their loyal viewers. :p

If they did, I wonder if they would just pretend ST V never happened...

Why bother with expensive new sets and costumes? I'd be perfectly happy if they just ignored the movie continuity and pretended TOS never ended.

Try to remember: the group at Star Trek Continues uses the sets built by the Starship Farragut group and both groups have worked together extensively behind the scenes on both series. I think the suggestions for a movie-era story from the Continues side are largely tied to that factoid.

Whether Continues decides to pursue such a story or not is entirely up to them. So far I've been quite pleased with their efforts and would welcome whatever Episode 4 will be "on credit" as it were because, really, by now, I know they're good for it.

Totally - they announced on TrekMovie.com that Farragut Forward would be set around TWOK and new sets would be built in Washington DC. Unfortunately there's been no updates since as I guess they're focusing on The Crossing Kickstarter and STC 4 (TM.com said they begin filming in April) but hopefully behind the scenes things are moving forward (pardon the pun)

As well as Farragut Forward other things can be filmed on them; if not VicKirk Continues movie era (actually straight after TMP might be interesting) series then maybe a Star Trek II-and-a-half movie or something can be done? There was never a proper Romulan story set during that period; ST3 was meant to be Romulans but the studio noted the wider audience would more acquainted with Klingons.

I don't know how much they plan to build but the sets could even be used, with a slight redress, as early TNG era sets. It can only mean opportunity. :)
