Really enjoyed this. As I stated in the "What are you reading" thread, I was surprised by how ultimately similar the tales are while still being very different in execution. I guess I'd always been under the assumption that Ellison's version was this radically different take on the story. I can definitely see how this story would be difficult to do in 1966 and I also see why Rodenberry was leery of some aspects. (I'm slightly surprised some of the "Spock perceived as Chinese" dialogue wasn't punched up a little bit. While I understand we're getting the raw story I found some of it to be straight up distasteful in a modern work.) I struggle with Woodward though. At times his characters look great and his cityscapes are marvelous. Other times it feels like a tracery of Shatner right from an episode or in some cases we get very blurry faces if they're in the middle distance. The all-black pages with the floating heads also rubbed me the slightest bit the wrong way. Overall, though, I really enjoyed this and I really like the way they bound this book with Juan Ortiz's great cover.
