Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Just got back from a 2 pm screeneing had only 4 tix sold before we purchased, but theater was over half filled on a Friday so feel should have a good weekend.

Loved the film, very TOS which is what I prefer most, but like all ST. Story had some holes, etc. but all do. Felt great at end with Krall thing, felt VERY VERY TOS there \

LOVED the crew was on the planet or Yorktown wearing regular duty unis as they should be.

Saw it this morning at 10:50 AM in a local mall theatre (only 5 bucks in non-3D). There was another larger theatre that was a couple of miles closer, but I figured the mall theatre would be less crowded. Even so, there were about 20 people there at that showing and it was a fairly good mix of ages and ethnicities. I knew I was in trouble before the movie started, however, when a 12-year old kid sat next to me with somebody rather loud with everything he did taking the seat behind him.

But the movie...my God, it's probably the best looking Star Trek movie ever, IMO. Visually stunning many times, great action sequences, yet it had plenty of character moments. Each of the "big 7" played a key role in the story, and I loved the little Easter Eggs for long-time Trekkers sprinkled here and there. Even though the kid next to me became obviously bored and the loud guy behind him felt the need to yawn louder than the movie every 20 minutes, I loved it and I think it may truly be my favorite Trek movie of all time. I don't think it's fanboy proof, but I don't think any movie is. Still, Beyond showed that Trek movies can really be big & epic in scope and still have those strong characters.

Yeah, the special effects in this movie were clearly done by a different (and superior) effects company. That lighting.

The theater for Friday night was about 1/3 full in the cineplex.

So many references, I think every series got a reference except maybe DS9.

Just came back from an 8 pm showing. About half full..

Loved it! Oh my god, this was exactly the film I wanted! All the characters were exactly right, including - finally - Kirk. Chris Pine totally nailed him. No longer the party time frat boy, he's more seasoned, quieter and introspective...but retaining that boyish charm. For the first time since the 2009 film, I wanted to see more of him. This is James Kirk. Totally thrilled to have him back.

So many Easter eggs and callbacks. Some actually made me teary eyed. The tributes to Nimoy were touching.

Yet it was bittersweet. Chekov had a larger role in this one and Anton Yelchin's tragic passing hovered over his every scene.

Otherwise, damn. Such a fantastic movie. Abrams and his usual writers can stay over by Star Wars or wherever. This Trek hits all the right notes. I can't wait to see it again.

I quite enjoyed it. I thought the story was structured better than Into Darkness, and I loved the character stuff.

Strangely, even though he was in a lot of scenes, I felt Idris Elba was a bit underused, or that his character could have been given more depth, or something.

I don't post much these days, but I felt compelled after my viewing to +1 the echo chamber here. The movie is fantastic, and that was my impression before I read/watched all the reviews to make sure my opinion was correct (winky eye roll). 2 weeks ago, Jeffrey Combs personally called me "Pinkskin!," so I can tell you that I adored this film. See the flick, in theatres, so that we can get more like this. Sorry to sound like a shill, but this is a blast. Is it the best thing since sliced apple pie? Probably not, but at the 50th Anniversary of the franchise, this film is a fitting tribute.

Am I Phantom Menacing? Hard to say, at this point. Does it seem fresh? Yes. Will I see it again? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. Does it have flaws? Yes. Do the pros outweigh the cons? Yes.

Just my 2 cents

I liked Krall as a villain. He's definitely one of the better movie ST villains imo. He does suffer somewhat from "we only have a certain amount of time to tell this story in a film" syndrome. If he was the villain for say, an entire season of a TV show, or a recurring one ala Dukat, then he'd have been brilliant imo.

But for what they had to work with, I found him to be pretty compelling/interesting.

Maybe more people will be going to the movie theater this weekend in the States since it is so hot in much of the country.

Many, many fans are saying that STB is awesome, we have read positives reviews. It seems to be the best of three movies. But, I think box office is still low in USA. To be honest, I expected more. Some friends say: "It is still too early to say". Maybe box office overseas can surprise. Could I be dreaming high? Will Star Trek never be a massive blockbuster? Have to content myself with U$500 mi?

Part of it is the lack of promotion. I have several friends and family who are more casual Trek fans, who didn't know this movie was coming out this weekend.

Beyond had way more promotion than any other Trek movie in history. It's been going for 2 months.

I'd love it to do $70 million + but ultimately it's already been made. As long as it's good, and I can re-watch it I'm happy.

Well, it is true. Here, in Brazil, release is only september and there is not marketing. There will be a premiere in july 30 (São Paulo and Rio) and I don´t see any promotion, TV spot.

My guess is: in USA same box office Star Trek U$ 250 and a increase overseas, maybe 350. So, I hope U$ 600. I expected more. Who knows?

Perusing Facebook, it's pretty satisfying to see so many naysayers fall silent. In particular, one group seemed very anti-JJ and after a poll on how many were never going to see the movie, only 4 replied they wouldn't. Other who have complained over the last few months are now asking me for promotional materiel.

I think as fans we all want and expect more but it's looking like 58-62 million opening weekend at this stage. Shame as I think it is a fantastic blockbuster and a way better film than the last star wars.

As a space adventure and one with heart, Beyond outclasses the last Star Wars movie by many a mile.
