The rumours may well be exaggerated but we'll never know. Orci is a conspiracy nutcase who never directed a movie - I'm glad he's gone, I'm much more pro Lin than Orci. That doesn't change that "less star trek" is the rumoured demand for the movie, the opposite mandate of the new show

We're debating rumours here. Maybe the reshoots were planned. Maybe they weren't. Rumours are they arnt. People are allowed to be wary after stuff like fanta4tic.

As for the marketing, it's not normal for a blockbuster. Or for ID. There are tons of articles online about it, from entertaient sites asking what's happening. Is that good? Is it bad? We won't know until the movie come out. Maybe Paramount just trying to distance itself from JJ's failed mystery box (khan) process and go a different way in marketing. Maybe they were concerned with the film, hence the reshoots, as the rumours go
Who knows.

All I know is I'm not excited for the movie. I'll still see it unless it gets bvS rotten tomato scores. Which I'm not expecting. I'm just not digging it.then again, I'm in my early thirties now. Paramount doesn't t care if I dig it or not.

It was a week of re-shoots.

People were still flapping their arms about it when it had already been finished.

As for the Orci script being too-Star Trek, who knows until we can all have a look at a copy!

Without knowing much more, I'd say too-Star Trek in this context, meant perhaps something along the lines of the search for god or two hours of telepathic aliens torturing everyone or alien's altering people's perception of reality etc.

In other words, not going to make a lot of money. A reality all of us have to admit the studio has to take into account.

It's fine for episodic TV but not when you have $150m on the line.

It's not Simon Peggy that's worrisome, it's the rumours of the studio throwing out the first script because it was too star treky and demanding a guardians of the Galaxy clone, followed by an almost complete lack of marketing until recently (and the resulting rumours of why the lack of marketing) then 6 weeks of unplanned reshoots a couple months before the movie is released and trailers that seem to have revealed the entire plot.

Thanks for summarising all the false rumours the fanatical haters have tried to spread.
1: Various people have explained that "too Star Trekky" was misinterpreted, and was really about having a story accessible to all, not dependent on hardcore continuity references. A good thing.
2: GotG clone - after ST09 and STID, did anyone really expect a return to the tone of TMP? Nu Trek is an exemplar of modern sci-fi movie style, and it got there years before James Gunn.
3: No marketing? What have we been endlessly dissecting these last few months, then?
4: "Unplanned reshoots" - for this read planned reshoots, which every major movie does. You should know this.
5: Trailer revealing plot: For fans who have analysed every frame, a lot of the story is known - or guessed at. But there are still many crucial story turns which are a mystery at this stage. Mainstream viewers have not been so analytical, so the argument doesn't apply there.

In terms of planning for re-shoots, any major film would have a couple of weeks of 'spare time' built into the schedule during post-production for re-shoots.

It's just good project management.

If you don't need it, fine. If you do, you won't delay the film's release.

Just like a smart builder knows to allow for rain delay days for any construction projects.

I just watched the Sabotage trailer again. Y'know, now that we have context for it, it works much better. I think they should relaunch this trailer just in the final week before the premier, to get everyone really hyped up.

5: Trailer revealing plot: For fans who have analysed every frame, a lot of the story is known - or guessed at. But there are still many crucial story turns which are a mystery at this stage. Mainstream viewers have not been so analytical, so the argument doesn't apply there.

I will be that the popularly accepted/assumed story line that's going around will only turn out to be about 40% right. At best.

I heard this analogy once, and I thought it was great.

The difference between Fast & Furious and Transformers is that F&F feels like kids playing with toy cars having a good time, while Transformers feels like your uncle taking the toy cars and doing all kinds of inappropriate and stupid things with them making you and your friend uncomfortable.

Perfect analogy. And perhaps the first one ever heard that explains the "toy car humping peoples legs like a horny Bijon Frisse" bit.

I don't think the movie will be bad per say. I just am not excited about it like I have been for every other movie in the franchise. I'm "meh" about it. Nothing Paramount has done in regards to this film has made me hopeful about it.

The new series, on the other hand, has me super excited from the decisions they have made. Its like they are doing the exact opposite of the new movie. Instead of "not your fathers star trek" they are embracing the past with the writing staff, and Fuller had never made a misstep in my eyes, even his Munster reboot was great.

A film that promises a 5-year mission. New aliens, the depths of space and a real space opera. The newness seeps out of every second of the trailers. If you can't get excited about it, then maybe it's you?

Generally speaking, most fans wanted something "new" from Beyond. To leave Earth behind, get back to space and exploring. Well here we have it in spades and spectacular fashion, in clearly the biggest scale Trek movie yet and you're still not excited.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at Rama? I've (thought) I made it quite clear that this is my own personal opinion and that others may feel differently. The marketing may be spot on for you but it's done nothing to excited me. The CBS show, despite virtually no marketing beyond the announcement of writers, has me super excited. To each his own.

Generally speaking, most fans wanted something "new" from Beyond. To leave Earth behind, get back to space and exploring. Well here we have it in spades and spectacular fashion, in clearly the biggest scale Trek movie yet and you're still not excited.

Because it still doesn't seem new to me. Kirk's ability to command is being doubted (TMP, ID) this time by himself (wok). Enterprise is heavily damaged / destroyed (Sfs, Gen, 09, ID) Kirk is by himself with a few key members of his crew trying to save everyone as an action hero (09, ID) Kirk saves everyone, movie ends with Kirk accepting his destiny as Captain with a speech by someone about exploration and the launch of a (new) Enterprise (WoK without the new ship, VH, 09, ID).

I may be wrong, and I hope I am, but that's what I've got from the trailers and commercials. 50 new sets of make up and a new name for a generic villian don't strike me as new when the same basic plot that we've seen so many times is being followed. I'm sick of hero journeys, blown up enterprises, and ships launching at the end. I want to see something different. It maybe the movies can never do that because of the nature of the medium. That's fair enough. I simply can't shake the feeling that I've seen this movie before. Time and time again. Nothing in the marketing has made it feel new to me.
