Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Some speculative reading (probaly completely unrelated to what will be in the movie, but anyway...):

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Yorktown_(Constitution_class)

At about 0:40, they seem to rehearse (or are filming) a rescue operation. Since they are running from the ship, it's safe to assume it just crashed, and thus hasn't been there for a while. But it seems strange that the ship is so weather-beaten. Perhaps it's been spending too much time at the bottom of the ocean...

I also retract my position on the ship. As has been suggested by others, the crash is probably old and its wreckage left intact as a monument. So, a TOS Connie called the Yorktown is definitely a big-azz homage!

Re: The crashed 'ship' in Dubai...

I think were seeing them film the crash itself and that it is a flashback or something. Obviously it would take them a little while to establish a base with commemorations of the crash and it's victims.

It's also possible the Yorktown commemoration stuff is seen at the films conclusion and that the crash is not a flashback.

Yorktown was the first name of the ship that Gene Roddenberry has suggested for his series. This name can be a tribute.

Here's my $0.02:

This wreckage is a memorial to the U.S.S. Yorktown, lost in battle at this location (kinda like the U.S.S. Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor). And that this is actually foreshadowing the wreckage that we first learned about a few months ago (the viewscreen and circular corridors similar to the nuEnterprise.) I think the nuEnterprise is also going to crash and be destroyed like the Yorktown was.

Interesting. But if it's a memorial, why would people be running to and from it?

Yorktown crash recreation? Sorta like a Civil War re-enactment...

I don't believe that the ship crashed long before and the city was built afterwards. There is debris in front of the saucer and it looks not withered. If the ship crashed and the survivors settled there, why should they keep the debris there and keep it clean?

The dirt or scorchmarks on the saucer are probably from the descent into the atmosphere ( no shields?) and the crash itself.

the picture with Pine and that lady who, I guess, is a superior, could she be the president of the federation of planets that was rumored to be in the movie a little while ago? y/n? (I still think those rumors might be related to Orci script though)

I get the impression that the jumpsuit uniform might be the new costume designer's replacement of the dress uniform we saw in stid.

It seems also that the female duty uniform (that Uhura should wear too) has long sleeves and rank stripes, so certain segments of this fandom who complained about that can relax, I guess.

+1
it looks like it just crashed and people are escaping and helping the injured. In one of the videos you can actually see an officer who faints and another helps her.

I hope they don't destroy the enterprise again that would be like a joke after the last movie, tbh. Though, another ship crashing, no matter which, would be kind of reminiscent of the other movie.. so much for a new story...

My disappointment, so far, is that I originally assumed that Dubai would be the set for a new never explored before planet with a new civilization. Instead it seems to be just a starfleet outpost where the prominence of humans compared to aliens might be a clue that we're still in earth.
So far from what it seems I don't get why they needed to go in Dubai, at all. But we will see...

I think the new jumpsuit is the replacement for the flight suits in STID, not the dress uniforms. They're far too practical (padded knees, tech in the sleeve etc) for formal use.

Which of course begs the question, what is the blue costume Kirk is wearing in the pics from Vancouver? To me it looks like it and these jumpsuits would serve the same purpose.
Hello, All!

DarkLight HIjol here in Dubai, with the latest News here in the Emirate, concerning ST Beyond. Forgive me if this is old news:

Cool! Looks like school kids with an (alien) teacher, loads of cool aliens and... a woman in a wedding dress??

Yeah, I have a friend in the Film office, and I am trying to find out what that is all about...related or coincidental meeting. Looks related to me, but, you never know around here!

If you take the squiggly out of the center of the Yorktown logo, it sorta looks like an outline of DS9.

I'm really curious what that symbol represents. Perhaps the planet has some weird properties (metaphasic radiation:p :p :p) and what started off as a weird sensor readout became their colony insignia?

Yorktown...that was supposed to be the name of the Enterprise A wasn't it?

It's unclear to me whether that was something concocted after the fact by Roddenberry, to commemorate the fact that Yorktown was the name for the ship in the original pitch for TOS.

it is generally accepted that 1701-A was actually the USS Yorktown, rechristened the Enterprise after the events of ST:IV to reward Kirk for saving Earth. Assuming that is the case, the physical ship was in service for at least a couple years probably before those events.

I have got it from Memory Alpha article.

"Gene Roddenberry, in a nod to his original name choice from 1964, suggested that the Yorktown was renamed USS Enterprise-A at the end of Star Trek IV, explaining why the latter ship seemed to be launched so quickly at the end of the movie. The Next Generation fourth season writer's technical manual also indicated this to be the case. This was further validated when, in the Encyclopedia, Mike Okuda described the Yorktown in 2293 as the second ship to bear this name".

Yeah, that's perfectly in line with what I said. The question I have is, when did Roddenberry suggest that the Ent-A had been Yorktown, before or after TVH was written?

Depends on how much of the movie is really spent there. The one thing we don't seem to see are any more aliens that look like Boutella's. Not sure if that means anything. We also have no idea about Elba's character (human or not). So there still could be some "strange new worlds," or at least people, involved.

To be honest, a lot of TOS took place in "familiar" space, but they still ran into a lot of interesting things.

If they filmed it all in a Jack In the Box in Encino, I'd be fine with it as long as the concept was interesting.
