Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Fantastic 4s tagline. Looks familiar
Beyond darkness... beyond fear... lies the fantastic.

STID
Beyond the darkness, lies greatness.

Tagline for TWOK was "Beyond the darkness lies Vengeance"

And realizing that, I really wish STID had gone with its original title "Star Trek: Vengeance"

Maybe Orci's ST3 would've carried on themes, some loose ends, characters etc from STID (guess we'll have to wait for IDW to an adaptation of what was planned - 'Beyond Darkness'?)

I think we'll still see a bit of that in Beyond. It may well be that there have been some conscious decisions to separate the pic from its predecessor in light of newly-perceived avenues ("make this more like GOTG," etc) but it'll still be the third flick in an ongoing series, and I don't foresee it truly avoiding references in the way that TWOK sort of did with TMP, or TUC did with TFF.

ID was relatively well-received overall and made an appreciable sum of coin. It ain't no bomb.

Still, having Gatt and then axing Gatt does suggest the potential for a pretty clear message.

I always wind up thinking Cupcake doesn't make it off of Qo'nos until proven otherwise. I don't know why. Same with that other fellow.

The black guy bites it in a deleted scene, but Cupcake just... vanishes.

*Cue Kirk doing the Home Alone "OMG!" scene about Cupcake*

Dumping a walk-on like Gatt tells you nothing about the relationship of this script to STID.

STID was not a fanfic script; even the script to Fantastic Four is head and shoulders above fanfic.

anyone like to see something of a mini sequel to STID in the form of a pretitles opening sequence of the end of TWOK redux (like The Terminator redone opening at start of Genisys) a burned bloodied Cumberbatch on damaged Reliant activating Genesis in the heart of a nebula. Ent warps away as Khan goes boom, no dead spock obviously. Credits start STAR TREK BEYOND

STID is riddled with elements that are common in fan-fic. Gratuitous cameos that barely serve the plot (Nimoy), titillation (Alice Eve), slash romance between leads that don't really need to be hooked up (Spock/Uhura), jukebox homages to Trek's greatest hits (Kirk dies instead of Spock, Khaaan!), etc...

Titillation is common across all forms of entertainment and especially Star Trek. Not really a fanfic thing. The Spock Uhura romance is a carry over from the previous film. Star Trek loves it's gratuitous cameos ( see any appearance by Chapel or Rand)

Evaluating commercial entertainment from the perspective of fanfic and looking for the "influence" of the latter is looking through the wrong end of the telescope - sheer idiocy.

I like to jump in anywhere I can get the chance to say once again, "Bless you, William Theiss."

I'd name my first kid after you if it wasn't decades too late. Maybe in an alternate timeline.
