Except it kind of ruins the whole point of a secret code name for a movie if you blab it on the Internet.

So is "Washington" just a code name chosen at random, or a pointer to the plot?

Chances are that it has no relevance to the plot whatsoever. Remember that the project name/working title during filming for the 2009 movie was "Corporate Headquarters".

EDIT: I was confused and thought you were talking about STID, for which "corporate headquarters" might indeed be a pertinent title. Anyway...

Here are a few possibilities for the new film, based on the working title:

1. Our heroes help an alien planet which is fighting for independence from an evil empire. (Washington, the historical figure)
2. The Enterprise is on a diplomatic mission that represents the Federation (hence the casting call for the Fed President). (Washington, the political entity)
3. An old monument gives clues to an ancient civilisation which isn't as extinct as it first appears. (Washington, the monument)

Perhaps they'll have to go back in time to stop the Klingons from killing George Washington before the Revolutionary War.... George Washington as played by William Shatner that is. XD

I bet we'll see one or two alien planets that look just like the pine forests of the Pacific Northwest. Maybe the Enterprise landing party will run into an SG team or Mulder & Scully while they're there. Or maybe they'll encounter alien owls that are not what they seem...

Filmmakers get crazy studio notes all the time. It's just part of the process. We won't know how much of an impact it has until the film comes out.
