Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Beyond does an estimated $1.6 million in Japan. STID opened to $1.996 million. The film is roughly at $340 million.

Star Trek Beyond ends up with about a 2.7 domestic multiplier. In comparison ST09 had a 3.4 while STID had a 3.25. So while we were worried that STB opened lower than the previous 2 releases, it actually released much closer to the previous movies than it fell short percentage wise in total domestic box office. It had much worse legs though than the previous incarnations.

STB OW / STID OW = 83%
STB Total / STID Total = 70%

STB OW / ST09 OW = 79%
STB Total / ST09 Total = 62%

The low multiplier surprises me. I never expected Star Trek to start to resemble a frontloaded franchise given its demographic. The movie clearly did not resonate with the general audience. Despite the good reviews the movie never received "must see" word of mouth. It was "fun" but "forgettable" flick and without any real hook it quickly got lost in the summer movie shuffle.

Stand alone stories. They are distinct stories without connection to each other except in relation to Kirk and Spock. I think, among other things, this did not generate interest from public, too.
It seems they produced each movie like it is the last.
The main point to emerge from the current debate: How to sensitize the audience to this next movie.
I don´t know.

I think "fun but forgettable" is how it is feeling to me. It was fun to watch, will buy it next week on Blu-ray, but not really dying to see it again like I did the first two. I saw the first two, four times each at the theater and have bought them each twice on Blu. I saw Beyond twice, the bigger thrill for me about the Blu is that it will be the first UHD disc I buy for my new player.

I'll for sure be buying the Blu-ray disc set... hopefully the one with a model of the Franklin, as I have the STID steel book, model of the Vengeance that came with, and the Target exclusive of ST09 with the big 10" long redesigned Enterprise, whose saucer section holds the DVD and BD.

I saw Beyond once, will see it one more time here coming up, then maybe sometime this winter when snowed in I'll watch all three back to back in really loud surround sound.

Watching the film again last night confirmed it as a winner for me, but I sure am getting sick of Bad Robot's current way of doing bonus content. Two discs of extras and I feel like I barely saw anything of note. There's no depth to any of it, it's just like the EPK fluff you get before a film's release.

Probably Paramount deciding how the bonus content is divided up.

Remember the good old days when you could just buy a reasonably priced disc with just the film on, or a more expensive 'special edition' with all the extras, maybe on two discs?

Meh. I'm getting the film, which is the important part for me.

The current trend seems to be that the DVD is barebones "just the movie, maybe one extra," and the Blu-Rays have the extras, with a special edition "Blu-Ray" with a lot of stuff.

Me too. Unless there's some interesting documentary on the extras, I'm not really bothered about them. Splitting the different extras across the various releases is what pisses me off. Just pure greed.

I don't know? I paid $3 more for the UHD version (Amazon) vs. the Target Blu-ray version. The Target version has a disc that I will likely never even put in the player and would cost me more.
