Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

It almost happened (Orci)
Only not really.

Ever since J.J. Abrams successfully brought Leonard Nimoy back into the Star Trek fold..., a quiet groundswell of support for William Shatner has existed on the Trek timeline to find a way to also include James T. Kirk in this reconfigured storyline. Shatner, himself, has fanned the flames, but those hoping for a surprise in this year’s Star Trek Beyond better brace for disappointment.

[ ... ] In an interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar.com), Shatner admitted:
There was never a conversation.
And with that, Shatner set his phaser to stun and shocked the Star Trek rumor mill into an uncomfortable silence.

It did not. First of all, they never offered it to Shatner. And if they did, he wouldn't have done it.

Over $338 million. Waiting for Japan in 10 days. Strange that beyond didn't go into discount theaters yet. Maybe they will forego that because of the early digital release.

lol the talk about repopulating Vulcan actually makes me remember how lame that conflict is. In all seriousness (that maybe the movie doesn't deserve but this is a message board so let me elaborate):
1) It seems everyone forgets that Spock is only half vulcan anyway so it doesn't matter if he reproduces with a human, vulcan or klingon: his offspring will be mixed just like him regardless.

When in need don't nitpick, one could say about the vulcans but still...if they'd be so bigoted to consider his kids with a human 'useless' because of the human part, I doubt they'd be much happier with kids that are less human but still have some of that.

2) 3 years later shouldn't all vulcans be donors anyway?
Personal thoughts about bigotry aside, forcing people into unwanted relationships for the purpose of procreation is not very efficient. Not to mention the sexist repercussions for fertile Vulcan women essentially asked to give up their careers and plans to become non stop baby makers.

It makes far more sense that the vulcans make new kids artificially too and those groups are taken care of by selected people who now have the job. It doesn't sound 'cute' but it is more logical than waiting for their species to get saved the old fashioned way by the survivors, many of which might be dealing with severe trauma after the loss of their home and loved ones.

3) I read some pointing up that it's racist for them to imply (assuming it's the intention, which we don't know tbh) that Spock's kids with a human wouldn't be real vulcans just because of their human heritage making them mixed. I'm not sure our supposedly futuristic optimistic inclusive trek should send that kind of message in 2016. Id like to think that while some vulcans showed signs of bigotry, what happened to their planet might have put some things into perspective for the better.
Spock himself had faced racism because of his dual heritage, had him truly left in stb and did what he felt forced to do, it would come across as going backwards with his character development and make it seems, again, that he should erase his human side and live as a passing Vulcan in spite of him being human too.

Neverthless, it shouldn't ignored that both him and his kids, whether he has them with a Vulcan or human (thus regardless the amount of Vulcan in them) should be considered equally valid as vulcans when it comes to representing them and continue their culture.

Now having said that, to be fair the movie didn't elaborate on that. Mccoy made that supposition but I personally doubt Spock's conflict, and thus the reason for the break between him and Uhura, was sorely based on that. I think he felt he had to help his people which meant he maybe needed to leave the ship and work at new Vulcan (for example their new science academy), but before he got the news about Spock Prime he wasn't 100% sure yet (that's why he told Mccoy he had wanted to discuss things more with Uhura)

Maybe. But, his is anatomically Vulcan.

His? His what? :vulcan: :rommie:

LOL I think he meant that from what we know, and in appearance, he seems to be mostly vulcan body-wise but it's also true that vulcans and humans share a lot of similarities in terms of both of them being 'humanoid species', to begin with, so there might be many different aspects of his biology that weren't addressed and that are either human or a mix of the two, but it may be hard to see where the 'non human' starts due to the existing similarities between these species.
Generally speaking, I think that for narrative purposes Spock's hybrid nature is mostly showed in a simplified way in that they use his appearance to represent his vulcan side, and his feelings to represent the human one. But even that is incorrect because I actually think his most passionate and violent feelings might come from his vulcan side, and perhaps in some instances it's his control that is human and can't compensate. Would be great if the new movies added more layers to this.

But I digress, the fact remains (my original point) that Spock is still a hybrid and he inherited genes from his human parent too. He's mixed. This can't be ignored because it means that regardless if he makes vulcan babies with a vulcan or a human, he will always father kids that have some human in them. If the vulcans were to consider his and Uhura kids not useful as vulcans because of their human side, I doubt their opinion would drastically change if he had kids with a vulcan because those wouldn't be 'pure vulcans' either. In either case, Spock wouldn't be their no.1 candidate.
This was only one of the points I made though. I still think that, regardless, all the vulcans would get asked to contribute but they'd find a more efficient and logical way to save their race than waiting for survivors to procreate the old fashioned way. Even if they don't have to wait every 7 years (you all, even DC Fontana was annoyed by some fans' misinterpretation of pon farr being assumed as the ONLY time they have sex)

eta: vulcans are compatible with humans so I think that 'anatomically' there wouldn't be a lot of surprises for Amanda and Uhura beyond maybe there being a fascinating shade of green somewhere. I guess the vulcans aren't for humans who want to try something truly different (btw, anyone got a clue about what was the purpose of Syl's head being like that in Beyond?)

Japan tour start today (lets hope they like bikes and Elysium style space stations)

still annoyed by how cool and professional the asian posters look compared to what the rest of us got.

If 10 years ago someone showed me this and told me it is a movie poster for a new Star Trek film this would have been my reaction.

And we're still wondering why Star Trek Beyond performed poorly in the box office?!

LOL , that one is not a poster tho. I think it's just a magazine scan. The asian poster is the first picture with all the characters, which I find really pretty and more professional looking than the official 'pink clouds' poster we got with only some characters.

Why is the Asian market always showing the action? Are Asians that shallow? Seems weird. 'Slow' movies or dramatic movies with a good story do not work for the Asian audience?
