I bet Gene would find it hilarious how many people swear that these films "stomp on his grave", as if Star Trek was always about old men sitting around a table discussing interstellar diplomacy.

"Sledgehammer" fits surprisingly well alongside this film. Have we ever had music like that in any of the old films?

Not a bad song. It might get some more eyeballs on the trailer. Let's face it, the movie is seeking to turn a profit and 99% of 70-80 year olds aren't going to see the film in theaters.

Well, just saw a commercial on AMC. Seems they are going the opposite route of Abrams. Instead of trying to keep secret what everyone already knows, they're showing the entire movie in the commercials. Even had what looked to be the last exchange of the movie as Kirk, McCoy, and Spock look up at something (E-A presumably) and McCoy asks if they really want to go back out there and the other two answer yes in unison.

So, we have the Enterprise in deep space, half way through the five year mission. Everyone having a bit of a crisis of faith. Kirk "I joined on a date." Wondering why they are doing what they are doing. Enterpise is attacked by swarm ships. Crew is scattered. Kirk teams up with white girl. Main crew is mostly unified. Dirt bike action. Fix up old Federation starship. Save the rest of the crew, defeat Idris Elba, go back to Federation space. Kirk has meaning once again. Speech from Shohreh Aghdashloo at the unveiling of the Enterprise-A. Final shot of the movie the E-A blasting to warp.

I think the stuff you are saying is at the end is actually at the beginning. The impression I've gotten is that at the beggining they've been out exploring and are getting exhausted, so they stop off at Starbase Yorktown for their firt break and they start to question if they want to go back out exploring. While there Kirk meets "High Command of The Federaition" where she gives him her speech. Something leads them away from Yorktown to wherever they run into Krall and The Swarm. They eventually end up back at Yorktown for the big climax.

So glad to see they're using the TMP-style poster for marketing. It's a great poster. Even if you're not a ST fan I think it's a more compelling poster than the other poster Paramount has been pushing.

OK, seriously *not* annoyed by the song. I fully expected to hate it, but it's kinda okay. It's like the complete opposite of Faith of the Heart.

Can't say I love the new trailer or the Rihanna song being associated with it, but I understand it from a marketing perspective. This will expose Star Trek to a lot of people that probably wouldn't have previously considered watching this movie.

Exactly. Think of it like this: a moviegoer sees the trailer, gets interested by it (a good soundtrack + space epic really gets people in the seats), and sees the film. They like it so much they check out the other Star Trek offerings, and become Trek fans. That's win/win!

The new Star Wars movie looks great! Seriously though, people can accept Sabotage and not Rihanna? I think her song sounds fine for this kind of thing. I imagine it's probably going to be a trailer/end credits only deal.

no, i still think that scene is at the end of the film. some stills i saw of that scene had Jayla there with kirk, spock and mccoy, in their civvies. im sure they find her on the planet earlier

I wear it as a badge of honour these days, but when I was young people would take the piss out of those of us who liked and watched Star Trek on the big screen (and the small screen), we could've done with one of the biggest stars on the planet doing a song or two back then to take the heat off us! The inclusion of Rihanna, I think, ups the 'cool quotient' and helps make it even more mainstream, and that's the only way Star Trek is going to survive this new world of superhero movies and Star Wars not being crap.

Visually the bar for future Trek's is raised to the Moon. If the story is anywhere near their quality then Beyond may become the KT's WOK.

The movie theater I go to is two towns over, and is locally owned, so I can't buy advance tickets unless I'm willing to drive 35 miles out of the way to a theater that accepts them. On the plus side, that theater does sell advance tickets about a week before the show, so I can still get my tickets before they run out of seats. I hope, anyway.

Oh, no no no no. You are NOT allowed to have a good time seeing a Star Trek movie. This has to be sobering, thoughtful treatise on the human condition, fraught with heavy handed morality, and it must involve at least one reference to either an opera, or a classical music piece without any irony whatsoever. To do anything else is to shame Gene Roddenberry, the man who would never have accepted any of this so called capitalism and popularism from the unwashed casuals. You just wait until all the angry fans who are upset with CBS over the fan production guidelines have their say! No one will see this film. NO ONE! TEH FANS HAVE SPOEKEN!!!!10NE11!!!
