Is it important to make a show that appeals to women? And if so, how would you do it with out tinkering too much and lose the 14 year old boy crowd?

But it's good to have sexy females in tight catsuits to appeal to the guys though.
IMO, any attempt to tailor Trek for a specific audience is an automatic set up for failure.
I think intriguing characters that people want to give a damn about, clever stories--and perhaps a sense of fun--will appeal to both males and females...
...although the reintroduction of women in miniskirt uniforms probably won't hurt. It certainly worked for TOS.

A return to the basics (meaning a ship named Enterprise exploring the unknown) certainly wouldn't hurt. It would be so easy to do too. Just set the show about 10 years after the Dominion War. Here's the premise:
- Starfleet is finally launching exploration missions again.
- The Enterprise-E has a new captain because Picard died of old age.
- The new captain has to prove himself worthy while the ship explores the former territory of the Cardassian Union. The Enterprise will also have to defend colonies (not all of them Federation), stop space pirates from selling surplus weapons to terrorists and various other misadventures.
...and finally...
- Starfleet finally remembers that most women actually like to look pretty/feminine and gives them the option of wearing a uniform with a (preferably short) skirt.
This premise brings back that feeling of a 'Western in Space' that TOS had and doesn't violate continuity either. Sounds like a winner to me.
14 year old boys who watch ST don't do it for the women...
I think the avg age of trek viewers is also somewhat higher.
ST should proceed as it always has, with women ever present and with all the dimensions they are capable of...perhaps with a few fewer catsuits.

*sigh* . I would think that women as "sex objects" would completely shoot any social progress ST has or tried to make in the past...20 or so years directly in the face...twice. We've seen woman commanders, captains and admirals. Now I'm not saying I didn't throughly enjoy Jeri Ryan and her outfits, but we can't just objectivefy women because we're all horny here. (That's what pr0n is for guys...come on). Women should remain EQUALS. Not more powerful or less, the same more or less. They should be somewhat sexy because they are women but shouldn't be the main focus. And no I'm not gay or weird, I'm just trying to keep up with cannon here.

1.) There is absolutely nothing wrong with me admiring the feminine form. That form is God's greatest work of art and it should be admired.
2.) I have always treated women as equals. In fact, I probably treat them as superior on a subconscious level because of so much of my ancestry coming from a Matriarchal culture.
3.) Porn is as disgusting as it is unrealistic in it's portrayal of the reproductive act.
4.) If you have a penis, you have objectified women in one form of another at some point in your life. It's not good or bad, it's simply our nature as men.
I've seen a lot of Star Trek fans comment that they though Jeri Ryan, Marina Sirtis, Nana Visitor or Jolene Blalock looked better in a Starfleet uniform than they did in the outfits they wore normally. I'd agree with that too.
What I don't want to see is a new CW Star Trek show where they somehow manage to do a similar thing to what they did to Smallville - turn a show about superheroes in to a teen romantic drama.
Since I'm a woman, yeah. 
But what appeals to "women" doesn't necessarily appeal to me. Basically, it must appeal to me. Whether it appeals to anyone else is important only in terms of Nielsens.
Plus, us ladies can look pretty on our off-hours back onboard ship, when it actually counts.

But let's face it, Star Trek is horrible at the romance angle. They should decide everyone's celibate. Those romance of the week episodes are the worst of all the episode types and if they dumped em completely, I would not miss them one bit.

Because people make stupid assumptions about what appeals to this or that demographic. The result is crap, and half the time it doesn't even appeal to the demo anyway.
Judging from the active away missions on planets with a variety of temperatures and conditions, most women would opt for pants simply for comfort's sake. "Looking pretty" takes an extremely distant second to being comfortable and effective enough to do your job and presumably they get to keep their jobs for being effective, not for being decorative. Let's give Starfleet a small bit of credit for being a sensible, functional organization.

Those aren't the hunks I'd be choosing anyway. Spock was always way hotter than Kirk, Riker was too much of a fat-ass blowhard to qualify for hunk status (nobody on TNG makes the grade really), and Bashir's scrawny ass would get the boot in favor of Damar. And let's not overlook the enduring slash appeal of Chak & Paris, or the inimitable Trip Tucker, even if he does have poor taste in women, going in for the crack-ho skinny Vulcan type.
Ah, it's nice to be someplace where I can say that and not immediately get attacked by T/T'P shippers.
