Star Trek, ALWAYS My Way!

Another fantastic installment to your series, Admiral!

(takes bow) I thank you.

I love that you gave the science team something to do while Enterprise was dealing with the situation from the previous story.

Actually, that's a trick I borrowed from Larry Hama, the writer of the old GIJoe comic series. He did two issues of "Special Missions" where the first issue is about a Joe team in-country and the next was about the Joes that were coming to extract them.

Bottom line, it was an easy way to guarantee myself two episodes when I needed them. Probably won't happen again.

The realism with which you portray the circumstances (and people's reactions to them) in your stories gave the tense scenes here added gravity. You've taken a creature we all know from the Trek universe, and by altering the scenario surrounding First Contact gave us a Stephen King-esque confrontation that gave me chills.

Thank you much! (always nice to be compared to one of my favorites...)

Oh, and I loved Pike's referencing Lester at the end of the story. That man never pulls his punches.

That was actually another reason why I included her. Every now and then I get a complaint that Montoya isn't learning fast enough. Now that Pike has another example to go by...

Enjoying your series and looking forward to more. You provide a very subtle re-imagining (perhaps too strong a word) of the Star Trek universe. I particularly enjoyed the character development of Janice Lester.

Thanks, TLR, but are you sure you've read the whole series? See, "re-imagining" isn't too strong a word at all. It's probably not strong enough! The series is meant to be a pedal-to-the-metal reboot of the whole concept of Trek. If it seems "subtle" to you, I'm probably not doing it right.

Oh well. If you liked what you read so far, that's good enough. :)

Well, I took your advice and went back to read "The God Machine." It does help considerably in getting a handle on the context! :D

I must say, your series is about the best "re-imagining" that I've seen. A very entertaining, well thought-out premise. Still, if one jumps in and begins later in the series (like I did), it's easy to assume that the "differences" are simply part of Pike's era (although I was wondering why they never used a transporter ;)).

Great stuff!

^^^Thanks again!

(And, obviously, they don't use the transporters cause they're always broken! duh... ;))

A VERY SPECIAL Star Trek, MY Way...

Dear Readers, we now present The No-Win Scenario, a Very Special episode of Star Trek, MY Way. And no, by "very special" I do not mean we'll be finding out that Pike was abused as a child, or that Montoya was a teenaged unwed prostitute mother. No, this is the episode where your author takes the opportunity to slay certain personal bugaboos he has with canon Trek (and other fandoms), and in the process lotsa stuff gets blow'd up real good. Dive in, and remember: keep reading even if you think you know how its going to come out.

Re: A VERY SPECIAL Star Trek, MY Way...

A great re-telling of the Kobayashi Maru test. I literally had sweaty palms during the battle sequence (which is most of the story! ). Your use of naval parlance and battle tactics provide a tremendous amount of realism. When the Enterprise and Klingon ship went head to head, I could almost feel the tension on both bridges. Excellent writing and a most enjoyable story!

I thank you. :D And I just started Storms and Shadows, so I'll leave a review when I get caught up.

Re: A VERY SPECIAL Star Trek, MY Way...

What an action-packed story! Unrelenting and fun. I think I said it before but I will say it again, military inspired combat sounds a lot cooler than Trek inspired combat. It just feels and sounds much more professionals. These people a military pros and they now exactly what they’re doing.

Even though the story was extremely focused on the combat I really liked Montoya’s small part in it and her realization of what it means to be human. It gave the story a somewhat deeper feel. I really liked the interchange between her and Silas in the end, it was poignant and extremely funny “You can sleep with me …” (it gave me unclean thoughts as well)

Characters still have a tendency to break into lecture mode from time to time. It’s obviously justified at times but at others I wonder if some of the ‘explanations’ aren’t better suited for the prose. In the end this is probably nothing more than a subjective view on different writing styles.

I was surprised to see Enterprise delivering such a decisive victory to such a seemingly stronger enemy. Okay, Enterprise was a wreck afterwards but they still dispatched their enemy with relative ease. (Any words on casualties?) Of course they had those handy warp torpedoes but if this battle was a sign of Starfleet’s strength compared to the Klingons they must have had an easy time during the war (especially considering that massive task force).

Also, USS George Bush I can believe but the John Wayne? That seemed kinda silly. What’s next? The USS Tom Cruise?

Overall terrific effort as usual, sir. And it seems you have drastically increased your rate of production. Five seasons not at all that unlikely anymore, huh? Looking forward to see what’s next.

Thank you. :D

(And theoretically, Trek inspired combat is supposed to be military-inspired. It's just that canon Trek writers use WWII and Age of Sail warfare as their basis. I use Tom Clancy, Larry Bond, and the modern United States Navy.)

Glad you liked it.

That line was blatant theft, but I figured it would work here as well. I'll leave it to others to figure out who I stole it from.

Y'know, for such an obvious fan of TNG era Trek you seem to have a big problem with lectures. I don't see why. Most of the time TNG was nothing but one huge lecture disguised as space opera. Oh well...

An exact number, no, but there were wounded, though nobody died this time. (That is, no Humans died...) Pike mentioned that there were wounded in his report in the final segment.

Of course they had those handy warp torpedoes but if this battle was a sign of Starfleet’s strength compared to the Klingons they must have had an easy time during the war (especially considering that massive task force).

This reminds of a comment someone made about the respective forces in The Cavalier Incident. Let me say again what I said then: Don't let what you saw in this one episode make you think it shows a complete picture of Starfleet and the Klingon Armada. The Klingon force depicted here is a small fraction of the force the Empire could deploy against its enemies in a full-scale war, and MW-Prise is a refit, remember? It wasn't anywhere as capable during the war as it is under Pike's command, and Starfleet didn't have warp-capable torpedoes back then. The Reunification War lasted seven years for a reason.

What you saw here was more a testament to training and command ability. Pike used the forces available to him better than Kor used the forces available to him. Enterprise won because Pike was the better commander.

Also, USS George Bush I can believe but the John Wayne? That seemed kinda silly. What’s next? The USS Tom Cruise?

The real US Navy has at least one transport named Bob Hope. Why can't I name one after the Duke?

Dude, we're still only at episode SIX. We're a long way off from five seasons. But I'm still working on it.

Re: A VERY SPECIAL Star Trek, MY Way...

This was a damn fine piece of writing, Admiral. The pacing, the descriptive prose, and the masterfully handled action sequences made this a tightly written story and an immensely entertaining one. This read like Star Trek meets Tom Clancy, the combat portions reminded me vividly of his Red Storm Rising in their detail and scope.

And to think, all this chaos and death for one man’s attempt at revenge. Now, Kor’s not only lost a brother, but sacrificed his reputation and honor for having been killed (and losing an entire task force) to a singly puny Earther ship.

As for Pike, I’ve no doubt they’ll be dissecting this engagement in classrooms at Starfleet Academy before long.

Very, very well done.

RSR was one of the things I was trying to channel, especially the air battles.

Mostly true, but are you sure it was just about Kor's revenge? (Hint hint, spoiler spoiler...)

Maybe they'll even make a training exercise out of it or something, huh? ;)

Very, very well done.

Again, thank you.
