Star Trek: Academy

There's endless crossover potential as well. Whatever sets are made for the Academy will serve as Starfleet HQ or whatnot in the other shows.

I'm sure the mainstream audiences we need to come back for Trek to truly be successful will love a Star Trek show where nobody leaves Earth.

Yes, there are good stories to be told in the Academy. They just aren't the ones that really make you think of Star Trek. Maybe as a recurring theme in another series.

There's always the holodeck? Maybe we can finally get to the point that the holodeck adventures are special enough that we don't need to have malfunctioning holodecks for drama.

The holodeck would add an extra layer of emptiness to an already barren concept.

I’ve been trying to think of ways to add some interest to the Academy idea and it always leads me to a Starship Troopers affair, but maybe without the live ammo, or the full frontals. Maybe keep the full frontals.

Setting it in a war, with cadets fast tracked to serve on the front line would add poignance and drama, a sense of danger. Rommie war would do.

Let's agree to disagree on that one.

How about using STA as a way to highlight the cultural rightness of the Federation itself. After all, there are something like 150? different Federation members of which we've seen less than half, and have strong grasp of the character of at most a tenth. Surely a decent writer (which I admit might be a stumbing block) could do a lot with classes, social occassions and professional interactions with that?

I hope it is early 24th century the main cast have to be classic species vulcan, andorian, trill, human, tellarite

If all access still exists by the time this show gets on air. I wouldn't mind it at all if this went on Netflix though.

I don't know if I like the idea of this being a CW-type show. Something in-between Ender's Game and Red Squad from Valiant for the action would be perfect. For non-action parts, perhaps they can do something like Kirk/Uhura interactions in ST09 (all min and a half of it) for fun side.

Not Kid-Trek, teenage cadet Trek. No one wants Muppets from Space but a serious take on Starfleet Academy.

For non-fun side, put in the timeline few years right after end of DS9 with couple of Cardassians joining Starfleet Academy. There would still be a lot of racial tensions against Cardassians which attacked Earth few years ago.
the Cardassians were vital to defeat the Dominion, besides those who attacked the Earth were the Breen

You could generate tension by having loose cannon characters, but not at star fleet academy. They only take the best.

That pretty much leaves studying, exams, and relationship problems.
I remember that in Voyager, one bajoran told us that in the academy the teachers helped her pass because they wanted the Bajorans to join the fleet and the federation.

It would be interesting to see the tension among the students of the member species of the federation with foreign students of planets who can join the federation in the future.

they can touch on xenophobia

I'm going with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and the show will be on the CW and be typical teen drama.

That in universe fact would not stop prejudice against the Cardassians. Just consider RL prejudice against Muslims and canon episodes Star Trek ENT Home and Terra Prime.

I'd rather see an society that exhibits xenophilia.
Just imagine that you are a human or Andorian student your ancestors founded the United Federation of Planets to fight against the foreign invasion. and you go to the academy of the star fleet and for the foreign students the professors help them to pass their exams because the government wants its planets of origin to join the federation, you would not feel that it is unfair?

The people who attacked the Earth were the Breen not the Cardassians The Federation helped the Cardassians in their fight against the Dominion.

It would be ridiculous for the people of the Federation to hate the people they suffered one of the greatest genocides in history for fighting against the Dominion.

Prejudice is ridiculous and yet it still exists. It does not matter what the facts are for some people, because they will use any excuse to be racist. I repeat, just consider real life and watch the episode ENT Home where a human gave Phlox (a Denobulan) a hard time because of what the Xindi did. By then humans had a 100 year experience of aliens living on their world and yet xenophobia raised its ugly head.

the earth was a planet inhabited almost completely by humans and united earth was an independent state more than 200 years ago!

I think there may be xenophobia, but I do not think they blame the Cardassians for something the Breen did, but even when everyone knows that the Cardassians were the ones who suffered the most at the hands of the Dominion.

No Cardassians at all? I am going to have to rewatch that episode, So how about then some Breen students as part of Stafleet Academy? ;)

Cardassian would be more logical because they should have good relations with the Federation today. But if I remember correctly, the Breen did not suffer when losing the war. It is more a reminder that even the Breen gained territory. I doubt that the breen are interested in having good relations with the federation

"For the last time, x'gor! You will wear your uniform in class even if you have to pull it over your entire refrigeration suit! And don't protest with those weird computer noises, standard Federation is spoken here!"
