Star Trek a suprise at Comic Con?

I doubt it. I think that when they say no planned presentation they mean no planned presentation.

I suppose Abrams might decide to show some footage, unannounced. A trailer though? No.

i dont know. they seem to be playing up this we have been so busy editing we are going to have to throw something together thing a little much.

it may not be an actual trailer but i wouldnt be suprised if they had some footage.

They are bringing a rough cut of the completed film to Comic Con. Of this, I have no doubt.

They'll probably show some footage, some or most of which will make up the next trailer. Kinda like what they did with Iron Man.

Hopefully if Abrams & Co. do show some footage, someone will have their trusty hd camcorder ready ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if they really didn't show anything at Comic Con. At most, we might get a vague picture or two. Abrams loves to tease the audience, and he wants to hold all his cards for as long as possible. With nearly a year left until the film opens, he will want to be very careful with how much he lets slip out.

someone needs to wear a sombrero and stand up at the panel and say

"JJ, where's the f***in sombrero gonna be?"

whilst holding up a big printed pic of the Sombreroprise.

I understand that approach but I prefer the one that Nolan and WB are taking with The Dark Knight. Have you seen the shorts they have available on Comcast? Way too cool. Some of the local theatres by me are sold out for the Thursday night midnight showings as are the following 3 am times. A couple begin showing it at midnight Thursday night and are running it all through Friday morning and into Friday at midnight. The marketing has been phenominal. There's a lesson here, I think. Also, so many best-selling books are turned into movies and the millions who have read the books know the entire plot of the movies. Yet, many still have a huge draw and are successful. IMHO, if JJA/Paramount contiues too long with the super secret attitude, it will hurt ticket sales. They still have plenty of time, I know. But there are opportunities that are beginning to arise that they will need to seize. I hope they do.

How? You really think the avid Star Trek fans will suddenly choose not to check out the film as a form of protest for not knowing every detail of the plot in advance? Or that they'll suddenly get all apathetic about it?

No matter. The general public will still go. ;)

I disagree about the public. The general movie-going audience will not be pulled in unless the marketing is done well. Paramount has already got the majority of us who are Trek fans for the next film. We want Trek. The media blitz that WB has done with Batman Begins, and perhaps moreso with The Dark Knight, has pulled in so many more people than the comic book reading crowd and that's what will make STXI a success. The secret stuff may create anticipation with us but by going that route, the public won't care about what they don't know about.

The thing is I think we will get to see more the movie and learn a bit more of the plot before it's released, but Abrams and co. feel it's too far in advance at the moment. Due to Abrams's love of secrecy, no, we probably aren't going to get as much as we did with the Dark Knight, but we'll certainly have some more substantial information than we do now. At least I think that is a reasonable assumption.

Why are you assuming the publicity won't be well done? Paramount has just spent oodles on this film. They won't let it tank.

You already said, "if JJA/Paramount continues too long with the super secret attitude, it will hurt ticket sales" but it's way too early to start teasing the general public with plot details about Star Trek, a film which won't appear on screens until May 2009.

And the diehard ST fans will go whether we get teased or not.

abrams may love secrecy but he is dealing with a studio that found out if you have really good films you can sell them to people who normally wouldnt be inclined to see them if you can put the spirit of the films into the trailers.

this is what happened with both transformers and iron man.

the movies appealed to a lot of people out side of their original fan bases due a lot to their trailers (though the reviews helped too).

it was the trailers that sold going to see transformers to me and my friends.

as we saw each new trailer in the theaters we grew more and more interested in seeing after originally not wanting to see it at all.

to really succeed and bring the franchise back to life it is going to have to appeal outside of the really dedicated fan base.

so i can see paramount gently prodding abrams to at least giving us something in the trailers .

Huh?

All studios do this! Or, at least, they try to.

They were marketed well, yes. And so was ST:TMP, ST IV and "First Contact". But you can't market a bad film and get spectacular results.

it was the trailers that sold going to see transformers to me and my friends.
And then good reviews - and positive word-of-mouth from people who see it at previews, premieres and opening weekends.

Nothing new there. That's precisely why TMP, ST IV and "First Contact" were such big box office earners.

They won't need to "prod" anyone. It'll be a team effort. JJ intends for there to be trailers. But the studios have a lot of say about the content of trailers, not the director and not the producers. Harve Bennett was helpless trying to tell Paramount not to give away the destruction of the USS Enterprise in the ST III trailer. He was overruled.

Hey Therin, I think you messed up your quotes because it looks like you're quoting something I said when you're in fact quoting pookha's response to me. :)

Fixed. Luckily the time limit wasn't up. I hate it when that happens.

Sorry about that, Chief.
