Star Trek: A Rendezvous With Destiny--A Tale of Captain Ezri Dax

Sorry I have not commented recently. Christmas activities have eaten up some of my time. I am glad to see things progressing nicely.

Thanks, KJ_A. :)

In the discussion earlier you talked about how Ezri was portrayed with a harder edge in ST: Destiny. I rather liked that, it also made some sense in the context of the story. Ezri has just gone through the loss of her Captain and XO whom she had served with for an indeterminate amount of time and the federation was being invaded. I would liek to see a balance between the new harder Ezri and her lighter old self.

I know...and I understand the reason for the "edge". Still...yes, I did feel the need to restore what I loved about her old self, without hurting her command abilities. I'm glad it seems to have worked. :)

As for the latest scene I like the continuation of the quantum slipstream drive joke.

Yup--and I sure hope the pro authors will continue on that....

I am also wondering what decision Ezri is going to come to in regard to Julian. At this point it feels like the direction their careers have taken them is the biggest obstetrical after the personal is dealt with. I can't seen ether of them giving up their assignment for the other.

Don't worry. I won't have either of them retire, or anything. I have something in mind, but...that'd be giving plot lines away. ;)

One little continuity issue that I noticed is that you have started calling the runabout a shuttle yet in DS9 the two types were always distinct from one another.

Yeah, I just fixed that. The reason is that originally, it was a "long-range shuttle". But then, I realized that the Aventine had runabouts, so I re-wrote all that.

That brief error was just something I'd missed in the revisions. My bad. :(

Now, folks, an emotional wrap-up. A nice private moment, with the purpose of tying up a few loose threads--and having some last analyses of our duo. It's a Spock--POV scene.

(BTW...there's a little "Peter David" moment at the very beginning. If you re-read the last line of the Donatra scene first, and then read the first line of this scene, you'll see what I mean....;))

Now...there is a reference to a notable line from "Chrysalis", specifically, Sarina's own analysis of Ezri, which she gave to Julian. If you're familiar with that ep, you may know which line I'm talking about right away.

Finally, the setting of the scene, and the mood of the atmosphere is, yes, ment to evoke the same midset of a touching scene between Kirk and Spock in STVI:TUC.

So--without further ado....

Star Trek: Aventine
A Rendezvous With Destiny
Scene 21

This is…all in all…a good day, Spock thought to himself, as he meditated in his stateroom on the Valdore. He was lying on the bed, a single light shining on it. His fingertips were pressed together, his thumbs against his chin. He reflected on the previous week…and all he had learned.

He heard the chime, indicating someone was at the door. “Come.”

The doors opened. He saw in the doorway the silhouette of Ezri Dax. “I…hope I’m not interrupting anything, Ambassador,” she said.

Spock sat up. “Of course not, Captain.”

Ezri came in, as the doors closed behind her. She sat down on the cot, beside him. “I just…wanted to thank you, Spock. What you said to me, on that planet…all of it…it helped me a lot. I want you to know that.”

Spock nodded. “You are welcome, Ezri.”

He remembered…after Ezri had sufficiently recovered, she had offered to let him finish the meld—she had apparently felt that it was the least she could do, after all he had done for her. And so, at last, they fully understood one another…and had forged a bond deeper than friendship…rather like family.

The girl shook her head. “It’s funny…when you’ve been a counselor, like me, you tend to think that…your own inner problems aren’t that much of a challenge—that you can deal with them yourself. But…I couldn’t. I didn’t. I just…buried it within me, told myself that…all I needed to do, once I admitted to myself what I did…was wait for the right time, and make it up to Julian. I didn’t realize how much I needed to confront those things…and talk about them, with someone else…someone I could trust.”

“Interesting. In effect, then…I had served as your counselor.”

She turned to him, and smiled. “You know…I never thought of it, that way.”

“Neither did I. Nonetheless…I am somewhat familiar with such matters of psychology. It seems to me, that…that particular science is simply…logic, applied to the behavior of sentient beings.”

Ezri shrugged. “For the most part. But…you know it’s almost never as simple as that. I mean, if it were…it wouldn’t have been so hard for me, would it?”

Spock paused for a moment, considering this. “Perhaps not….”

“At any rate…you were a pretty good counselor—if I’m any judge.”

Spock nodded, permitting himself a small smile. “Thank you, Captain.”

Ezri tilted her head. “Have you…ever considered becoming one—for real?”

Spock felt his eyebrow shoot up. “Captain…?”

Ezri chuckled, and held up her hand. “Just kidding.”

“Undoubtedly.”

She turned away, shaking her head.

Spock watched her. This woman had gone on a great journey throughout the past week. That she could, after such a struggle, find it within her to “laugh at the days to come” was…fascinating.

And thus…I see that regardless of what happens to this woman…regardless of whatever trials she will face…nothing can change who she is…nothing can change the dignity, the innocence, the spirit within her. She is…a very worthy soul…truly greater than the sum of her parts—and indeed, she is now beginning to realize this…and recognize the potential within.

Ezri turned to him. “Spock…can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

Why did you want so much to help me?”

“Ezri…surely I had explained my reasons sufficiently.”

She shook her head. “It was more than that—more than just a desire to help a friend. Even from the beginning, you were so interested in finding out what makes me tick. What I want to know is…why did you want so much to learn about me—and help me with the problems I faced inside?”

Spock frowned. For a while…he had no answer. Why indeed?

But then, he remembered…how he had felt, on Starbase 24—his reflections…on the state of the Federation…the state of the quadrant…and the responsibilities he faced.

Ezri frowned in concern. “Spock…?”

He sighed…and, as Ezri had done for him, so he laid out the pain within. He felt his voice breaking…as he brought out from within the strongest…emotion…that he felt.

“I…am old, Ezri. I have seen my family…and friends…grow old…and pass away. I have seen those friends who still live…move on…and find that the universe demands that they change for it. I have seen…events, now recorded in history, which changed all our lives irreversibly—some for the better, some for the worse.

“And now…I see all around me…all the suffering…all the struggles. And I feel within me, as you do, a deep regret…that there is not more that I can do.

“But, most of all, I see myself…simply growing old. And,” he sighed, “As my age increases…I fear my ability to influence the universe for the better…diminishes. There is still the unification movement…but I fear that, soon, even that will leave me to wonder…if I have outlived my usefulness.”

Ezri stared at him, shaking her head. He could see tears forming in her eyes. “Spock…that’s not true. We need people like you—now, more than ever. I think…I think the problem with the universe is…that there just aren’t enough people who…who want to…”

“…to ‘do the best they can’?”

Ezri nodded.

“Perhaps, Captain—perhaps….”
They said nothing for a while. But finally, Ezri smiled. “By the way…I’m still waiting for an answer.”

Spock leaned forward. “I believe you know the reason.”

“I…do?”

Spock nodded. “You have said it: the universe requires more people—such as I…and such as you. I wanted to see whether…after I, and Picard, and the rest…are gone—whether we will have left the Federation…in good hands. And indeed…it is in good hands.” He permitted himself a smile. “Your hands.”

Ezri chuckled, and her gaze fell for a moment. “Is that why you said all those things to me—about greatness…and how much of an inspiration I am…and all that?”

“Yes. Ezri…none of what I said was flattery, I assure you. It was all simple fact. The mistakes of your past cannot change that.”

Ezri sighed, and turned away. But Spock was not through.

“You see…I do see a great potential within you—the potential to, indeed, change the universe for the better. In effect…the evening star, that provides hope…amid the darkness.”

His gaze moved to the side, as a thought suddenly occurred to him.

“In many respects,” he said, “You are quite reminiscent of another starship captain I once knew.”

“Really? Who?”

Spock paused, to stress the moment, and replied, “I served under him for many years…and for many years now, he is gone. However…I still, and always shall, consider him…my friend.”

Ezri slowly turned to him, her eyes wide…her mouth open in a small, silent gasp. “Spock…” she whispered, “You…you’re comparing me…to…”

Spock nodded. “James T. Kirk…also possessed within him an…inherent desire to ‘do the best he could’—and, indeed…he too had a tendency to…” as another smile played on his face, “…to put aside thinking—and simply ‘do’.”

Ezri shook her head, a half-smile of astonishment on her face. “But…but I…”

“You do not feel…worthy of this comparison…because of your mistakes.”

She sighed, and gave a light shrug.

“Let me state, then, that Kirk’s…instincts…often led him to the wrong course of action, as well. However…he knew, as did I, that the consequences of indecision…would invariably have been far worse.”

Ezri blinked. “Really?”

“Yes. And furthermore…he used these failures as experience, to assist in guiding his own judgment—refining his instincts, as it were.”

Ezri’s gaze fell inward. She was clearly considering the meaning of what he was saying.

“Perhaps, Ezri,” Spock concluded, in a lighter tone, “You should learn to trust your instincts more often. After all, I have reason to believe that your…initial reluctance to speak to me of…your loss…was mainly out a desire to think, rather than do. But as I have stated, there are times for analysis…and times for instinct. And I know—that whatever the mistakes of your past…you truly possess the wisdom to know the difference.”

Ezri looked up at him. “You really think so?” she asked, in a small voice…much like that of a child, who hears from her father a heartfelt proclamation of the great ability inside her.

Spock nodded. “Yes…I do.”

Ezri glanced downward for a moment, as if in hesitation. And then—she threw her arms around him, holding him in a tight embrace.

Spock sat still, unsure of how to react.

Ezri released him…and smiled. And despite himself, Spock could not help but take note…of how beautiful she was, particularly in moments such as these, when pure joy seemed to fill…every fiber of her being.

“Thank you,” she whispered, as her eyes seemed to moisten once again.

Spock nodded, knowing that her embrace had been, more than anything else, the seal of their friendship.

Very nice--and I definitely like the Ezri-Kirk comparison. That said, I would be FAR more willing to serve under Ezri than under Kirk. Being groped and leered at by my commanding officer is NOT something I'd want. Ezri seems to have more respect for people, by far, even though she's impulsive...way more respect than Curzon or Jadzia ever did. And that is a wonderful complement to her skills.

All right, folks. This is it. The end of our tale. Thanks to you all for sticking with me. Now...the conclusion.

Star Trek: Aventine
A Rendezvous With Destiny
Scene 22

“Captain’s Log, supplemental: The conference between Ambassador Spock and Empress Donatra has concluded. The Ambassador has expressed his confidence that it has gone successfully. The Aventinehas arrived at Achernar Prime, having successfully concluded its relief mission to Regulus. We are now setting course for Starbase 157, to return the ambassador to Federation space.”

* * *

Ezri walked with Spock to the main transporter room. They had just arrived at Starbase 157, which meant that he was leaving. She had insisted to Sam that she see off the ambassador alone.

“So…what will you do next?”

Spock turned to her. “I will…proceed to encourage the members of the unification movement to move into their new haven. I feel confident that…the majority of them will follow me into what proves to be, effectively, a new era for the movement.”

Ezri smiled. “So do I.”

They would soon be going their separate ways, and Ezri knew it would probably be a long time before they see each other again. After a moment of silence, she turned to him again. “I’m going to miss you, you know.”

“Naturally…and I you.”

Ezri nodded. “Naturally.”

But despite his leaving, she knew that, somehow, a part of him would always be with her. And she also knew… that so long as they both did the best they could…they would truly change the universe for the better.

As they walked on, Ezri found herself thinking, He and I…really do have a “rendezvous with destiny”, don’t we? I guess…each one of us does, time and time again. And I guess what matters in life…really is how we meet it, and keep it.

I think…we’ll both meet it with dignity, and honor. And when that rendezvous happens…that’ll be what matters, for both of us.

When they entered the room, Ezri headed for the chief’s console. “I’ll take over for now.”

The chief nodded. “Aye, Captain.”

“Dismissed.”

The chief acknowledged again, and left the room.

Spock walked over to Ezri, before he got on the platform. “May I ask, Captain…what you will do next?”

Ezri paused for a minute, and smiled. “Well…it’s interesting: before all this began, my chief medical officer offered to…recommend me for rest leave. I’m wondering if I should take it.”

I guess…I need some time to think…about everything you’ve said, Spock. Still…I know there are some things I need to clear up, before I can.

Spock nodded, and to Ezri, it was as if he could read her thoughts as well. “I see. And…where would you go?”

She hesitated, as her smile disappeared. “Well…I was considering…going back to Deep Space Nine, for a month or so. I’m starting to think…I’ve put this off for far too long.”

Spock nodded. “However…?”

Ezri shrugged, “I don’t know what I’d do, once I arrive. I mean…how do I talk to him? How can I…really…”

“Ezri…perhaps, once again, you are trying to force excessive thinking into a scenario where it is not required.”

Her smile returned. “Are you suggesting I simply…do it?”

A smile played on Spock’s own face. “I am suggesting that…you put aside logic for a moment, and ask yourself what your heart desires.”

Ezri closed her eyes, and nodded. “I understand, Spock. And…” as she opened them, and met his gaze, “…thank you. For everything.”

Spock nodded, and stepped onto the pad.

“Spock…” Ezri asked, unable to help herself, “Do you really think…that he and I…can…?”

Spock gave a slight shrug. “There are always…possibilities.”

Ezri’s smile grew. Yes…I suppose there are.

And with that, Ezri hit the companel on the transporter console. “Starbase 157, this is the Aventine. Prepare to receive Ambassador Spock.”

“Acknowledged, Aventine. Standing by for transport. Awaiting your signal.

Ezri looked up at the lone figure on the transporter pad.

Spock stood straight, his luggage beside him. He looked every bit the image of nobility, and dignity. “Farewell, Captain Ezri Dax. May you, in all your days, continue to do…the best you can.”

Ezri nodded, and as her right hand hovered over the transport control, she raised the palm of her left, parting her fingers in the Vulcan salute. “Peace and long life…Ambassador Spock.”

Spock raised his own palm, returning the salute to her. His voice was low…and solemn, as he said, “Live long…and prosper….”

Ezri nodded once again, in gratitude, and ran her right hand over the controls. For one last moment, she locked eyes with him, and they shared a look of friendship…and family.

Then, the sparkling shroud of the transporter beam surrounded his form. And at last…it dissolved, leaving nothing behind.

And Ezri Dax…was alone.

Ezri’s journey is only beginning….

A very good story with an excellent ending. I can't wait to read what you post next. Oh, and Happy New Year.

It's always satisfying to read work by authors who love these characters as much as I do. Thank you for a heartfelt and fun read!

Very well done. I was expecting a bit more with Donatra but this is Ezri's story after all. The interaction with Spock where they full opened up to each other was great to see. It feels like Spock has not talked to anyone in this way since Jim Kirk.
You make me want to see Ezri Dax and the Avantine atane the same level of satus that James T. Kirk and the Enterprise are held. And for the same reason, simply doing her duty.

You know it is to bad that Ezri will probably take a transport or runabout to DS9. I would love to see her show up in the most powerful ship in the fleet. I can just imagine Quarks reaction. In part that is the basis for an idea i had concerning a time travel fic involving the Aventine and the Destiny.

My gratitude to everyone's comments so far. Thank you all!

Thanks, KJ_A. And yes...in a sense, that was the mood I intended to evoke. Most of you may remember the scene from The Undiscovered Country, where Kirk and Spock discuss the future--and Spock discusses growing old....

You make me want to see Ezri Dax and the Avantine attain the same level of satus that James T. Kirk and the Enterprise held. And for the same reason, simply doing her duty.

Yup. And I feel that will happen. As this tale implies, I have a great deal of plans for Ezri--another "Rendesvous With Destiny", as it were.

Come to think of it, you could say that Ezri's entire life has been one "rendezvous with destiny" after another. She basically got the Dax symbiont by accident (on a ship called the Destiny, of all things); she took command of the Defiant in Avatar, by necessity; she was forced to take command of the Aventine because the captain and first officer died in action...just to name a few.

This theme was hinted at in the Destiny trilogy, but I thought it would be interesting to bring it up again. Hence, Ezri's lines about just doing the best she could--and Spock's dubbing her a "reluctant heroine".

You know it is too bad that Ezri will probably take a transport or runabout to DS9. I would love to see her show up in the most powerful ship in the fleet. I can just imagine Quarks reaction. In part that is the basis for an idea i had concerning a time travel fic involving the Aventine and the Destiny.

I was toying with that idea. But...I also had a scene concept of her showing off the ship to her friends TMP style--with the track "Enterprising Young Men" as mood piece. ;)

Rush, I really enjoyed this from start to finish. A wonderful character piece for both Ezri and Spock. You dropped quite a few little crumbs of food for thought in there, as well. Nicely done! I'll probably re-read it in its entirety as a single piece in a day or so and have even more to say then.

I think you've excelled yourself here in this story in creating some fantastic moments between Spock and Ezri. You obviously love the character and this shone through at every installment.

If you've not got your next project in mind yet, what I would like to see you tackle is moving beyond one of these beautiful pure character arcs and attach a regular story to your work. Imagine a 'pure character' Ezri Dax story - but merged with the Aventine on a traditional Trek mission of exploration and allowing us to see your take on the rest of her crew, which you captured well in their brief appearances.

Thank you, kes7, very much. I look forward to your thoughts. :)

Thank you, tenmei, as well. And yes, I love these two a great deal--Ezri most of all, of course, but I identify with Spock a great deal (as I do Picard and Odo, BTW--for similar reasons).

Interesting note: the germ of this tale came to be the second time I saw Trek '09. When I heard Leonard Nimoy's voice on the screen, it suddenly hit me, the idea for a "moment" between Elder Spock (as it were) and Captain Ezri Dax.

Of all things, it was the moment where Spock reveals that he sees her as remeniscent of "another starship captain..."

With my mental clockwork rolling, I hammered out more ideas for such a meeting of personalities--and the rest is history....

(I was briefly considering bringing in Admiral McCoy, but--nothing came of it, although I did pay homage to that with Ezri telling Spock that "I might throw up on you", which I had originally intended for her to say to Bones, as a ref to the movie.

Maybe another time....:))

Hmm...while I do have something in mind, I will take that under advisement...and see what I can do in the future. :)

Agreed. I'd also like to see you tackle a more traditional Star Trek story. On the other hand, you must follow your muse, and I would not object to further character pieces.

I've been enjoying these stories you have been writing myself too. I think I probably mentioned that in the last few threads somewhere. Have you actually thought of doing some pre Capt Ezri Dax stories? Mostly set on the Aventine before the events of Destiny? I was curious since no one else hasn't really done the battle when she finally receives the captaincy.

Actually, no. I doubt I will, for the simple reason that there's a big possibility that one of the pros will do it, sooner or later.

As I've often implied, I want to make my stories as consistent with the Pro-fic as possible, so...until I become pro, I probably won't write something like that....:(

Thanks for your comments!

^Look, if I get a storyline hammered out, I might, but it'll probably be after I go pro.

(BTW...I'll be counting on Y'all to encourage Pocket to publish this tale, when the time comes. ;))

Uhhh, did I miss something? Will they publish if you've already posted it online?

Oh, sorry - didn't see the fourth page and that you'd already posted a reply. I understand your reasons for being hesitant to write a story and post it here if you want to use it when you go pro.
