Star Trek 5 fixed FX?

Ihlecreations

Captain
So some friends and I were discussing the Trek films and I joked saying that I wish I did CGI because I would go and fix all the fx that I could in ST5. I am one of the few who like the film, (had Shatner been allowed to do his original story and not had his budget taken away it would have kicked ass) and would love to see it get the TMP DC treatment. Well Paramount doesn't seem to want to do it, how about someone out there? I can edit I just can't do the cgi. I would imagine only the space fx would be the ones to get done all but the Enterprise moon shot! Not sure if there are any other mattes or such that could be done. any thoughts?

^That's one of the few FX scenes from the movie that I don't think needs to be redone. All that crap from the Great Barrier, however...

^ Nice!

I remember someone at the Bring Back Kirk website doing this very thing. In fact, he was doing three versions: Version 1 was a straight forward CGI addition, Version 2 would reedit the story to be closer to Shatners vision, and Version 3 would cut out the comedy crap to make it more dramatic. Not sure how far he got with it.

There's some rock monster stuff in Galaxy Quest and Metroid Prime. I might intercut footage from that with footage from TrekFive.

It should make sense, right?

Poor visual effects are the least of that movies issues. It would be like a paramedic rushing to a gunshot victim to give him a nicer haircut.

That's correct, PhineasBg is his nickname on the internet.

Awesome vids :) :techman:

OK then so it looks like I am on the late show. As for the paramedic comment, to each his own I would say.
Yes, to each his own, but remember the majority of people think this is by far the worst of the original cast movies. Figures also support it, coming as it did after the most successful Trek movie at the time and then followed by the really quite good Trek VI. We are all lucky it didn't sink the franchise entirely.

The lack of ILM quality effects would not be such an issue had the story been interesting or suspenseful or full of danger and excitement, but it's not. Insert the most realistic effect imaginable, and you'll end up with a slow, boring movie with some nice effects. ST:The Motion Picture anyone?

Well...I think ST 5 is pretty awful and I tend to be vocal about that in the movie topics, but I also didn't think that was what this topic was for. Ihlecreations just wanted to discuss redoing the effects, and acknowledged up front that his liking for the film puts him in the minority.

I think most of Babylon 5 is unwatchable, but my interest in and admiration for what Foundation Imaging and designers on the show accomplished visually is considerable.

Those VFX look okay for themselves, but they don't fit into the style of cinematography of the movie. That's one thing those fanvideos rarely get right.

It was nice to see the shuttle rather than a light on a crane, but I wasn't so impressed with the rest. I didn't see it as a worthwhile improvement. To be honest, the effects I'd rather see improved were the physical shuttle effects. I'm thinking particularly the crash, and they could rub out the wires holding up Kirk in the fight scene afterwards where Sybock tosses him around.

I know what you mean, but I think if you would like them to be in the style of cinematography of the movie, then the Ferran scenes are just the right ones.
And that ofcourse would answer Ihlecreations question :)

Personally, I'd like to see someone bring the original vision of the devils attacking the shuttlecraft while on the planet.

I think it would be nice to redo the effects. Unfortunately I am not all the impressed with some of the new ones posted here. They, like the originals, lack a certain dramatic punch to effectively convey the situation. The Nimbus departure is especially lacking (both new and old) and needs to be re-staged and re-timed to effectively convey the urgency. The shuttle looks like a deranged fly darting toward a bug zapper. We need closeups and some "race car" shots to sell it. And the Bird of Prey needs to sweep into frame the opposite direction as it decloaks so that it marries better to the following shot. That one has a right to left camera move that starts on Uhura and ends on Sulu pressing the button. (Do they not teach narrative flow techniques in film schools anymore?)

And I would pay money... real money... to see the rock monsters attack the shuttle and chase Kirk. That would be awesome.

Refer to the thread with the crazy scratchbuilt TMP model. Do good ol' fashioned model shots, with some digital wizardry, and like... IDK, make the barrier look cool.
