Star Trek 4 Reportedly Shelved

I'm not sure how a Orci/Shatner would have retained the so called "cool" factor.
beyond the 'retro-cool' of having The Shat in a prominent role im not so sure it would've had any more 'cool' than Beyond did..unless audiences would've lost their minds for Shatners return to Trek like they did with Ford coming back to SW ('Spock..we're home...')

Kelvin Trek was shallow, action based Trek. Acted well enough. Beyond was the best of the bunch.

I would love for Disco or Tarantino to write Kelvinverse out of existence altogether somehow.

Maybe they should also “write out of existence” half the previous films and a fair chunk of the shows, because that’s a lot worse than the Kelvin films.

You’d think the mere existence of the Kelvin films had caused DVDs of previous incarnations to self-destruct from the way some people want to have them eliminated.

Disco is pretty much Kelvin Trek: The TV series, complete with lens flares and action, and high emotion over logic. It's also run by one of the movie writers/producers so....

Uhura wouldn't approve.

And yet, the JJVerse movies improved Pike, Scotty and Uhura 1000%.

*whispers in the dark: and Spock too*
(they made him more a co-protagonist, he's more contemporary as a mixed guy allegory, he gets a personal life and a mutual loving relationship with the best woman when his hair is still black, and there is hope he can finally bond with his dad. *

True. But maybe, since Spock was already pretty cool, this only constitutes a 500% improvement.

Indeed. I had to run and make sure my TOS VHS hadn't been snatched O_o

I think all of the classic characters got a nice new look with the films. Even with Kirk, who was irritating to some, was still fascinating as a character development piece.

It's easy to forget with 10 years separating us from it, just what kind of state the Trek franchise was in when that movie was made, and just how much it was a shot in the arm for Trek as a whole. Many people genuinely thought Trek was a dead horse after the double dumpster fire of Nemesis and Enterprise (I personally love Enterprise now, but it's tanking ratings indicated a clear trajectory). I don't know that a Star Trek movie, or certainly one with the money and love put into it that the 2009 film had, was actually a sure bet after Star Trek had basically become a poster child for franchise fatigue. It coming out so relatively soon after Enterprise's cancellation, and it being the critical and commercial success it was, absolutely assured the future of the franchise in whatever form that took. :techman: It's possible it even facilitated interest in, for example, the TNG blu rays happening, at a time when most people still believed it would be 'too much effort' to try and restore them. (The disappointing sales of such unfortunately putting paid to the idea of DS9 and VOY being similarly upgraded, but that's another story ;))

Don't tell anyone but I prefer kelvin Kirk over Shatner's version.
I'm not even a big fan of the character still (I definitely didn't want the movies to focus on him only at the expense of Spock and the ensemble AGAIN, and I was disappointed the fourth movie wanted to bring his dad back from the death etc, not to mention Orci wanting to put Shatner in that other movie), and maybe in part it's just my liking the actor, but I find kelvin Kirk more likeable with his mistakes and flaws. The characters aren't perfect, they are people. People who also evolve in context of what happens to them, not what happened to their tos counterparts. Narrative needs are also different, male characters at the time (original series) had to fit with certain expectations.

I'm a weird trek fan with unpopular opinions I guess. TWOK isn't this big favorite movie of mine either so, if anything, I didn't like stid trying to recreate parts of it because I'm not fond of that villain and story to the extent I think it's necessary to imitate it or pay homage to it. John Harrison was a fine bad guy with a story, he didn't need to be Khan and it kinda ruined him. Doesn't mean I don't get emotional when Spock sacrifices himself, or I hate the movie, it's just that, in general, I don't put old trek on a pedestal. There are things that disappoint me or I wish were better about kelvin trek just like in the old movies and show. Nothing is perfect.

I'm better with DSC than last season, but yeah, WAY more charm and joy in the three movies than the new show. Hadn't realized that.

Same here. Many do not like Kelvin Kirk, but I am fully engaged in his story and character development. From my observations, too much is placed on whether or not a character is liked, versus what the character's story is.

Yes, I know all the arguments for that, but that's my take.
