I love "Arrival," but the pace of Kelvin Trek vs the pace of "Arrival" would be like hitting the brakes at 100 mph. Of course, some would argue that would be just what Kelvin Trek needs anyway.
The irony would be if the big budget film got the small story while the streaming shows got the galactic threat stories.
Arrival was the adaptation of a novel. It certaintly isn't our usual sci-fi movie, and probably not all the people who like the genre would like that movie. Arrival didn't want to be the kind of movie trek is expected to be. It reminded me of the movie 'Contact' with Jodie Foster ..some might find this kind of movie not so satisfying for a number of reasons (for one, the fact you won't get all the answers. You can't know about the aliens more, you can barely see them because the point of the story is always the journey of the human protagonist and what kind of 'message' they get about their condition as humans) ...but I love them lol
I digress, while I agree that movie is too different, I also think Paramount (the movie was made by the same studio) could learn a thing or two from that in terms of what you can do in a trek movie too. Talk about seeing things a bit outside the box. I also liked the fact it's very hard to communicate with the aliens, that you can take nothing for granted, and it is interesting to me that there could be an alien race that experiences time in completely different way (I'm not sure I'd personally like to experience time like that myself, but I found it realistic as a reminder that in space time isn't a linear thing anyway)
The big powerful emotional plot device, of course, isn't something that I consider suitable for trek or a franchise. It isn't the kind of movie that inspires a sequel because the story is self-contained and resolved in one movie.
