Along those lines, if ST4 would even make a passing reference to a "Captain Burnham" (or whatever rank), the internet would go wild.
Wild might be an understatement.
Whatever the plot for potential Trek 4, I’m absolutely ‘champing at the bit’ to see the Kelvin timeline Enterprise 1701-A!!!
So if a plot can service lotsa Staship beauty shots, and panning from all angles, then it will have done its job well!
I would actually like to see a Kelvin timeline Klingon war / conflict (space-seeded in STiD) - despite the fact Beyond has moved things forward from this plot trajectory.
Basically - I just want more starships to drool over, and for Eaglemoss to make them all!

There's an outside chance that it won't be completely awful, and if they play up the Gigeresque body horror and Lovecraftian fear of the unknown, it would at least be interesting to see.

Well.. How about this.. bit of a mash up, but It goes together in my head abit...
Checkov out to Security school or another ship, Lt. Gary Mitchell is now at navigation, They are on there last leg of there 5 year mission, They come up on a system with a large black hole on its outskirts, the system orbits the black hole, and in a few months time, the system will be swallowed up by it, so they explore the system before it can be sucked up. They are near the galactic barrier, the Starship Excalibur was lost on a mission to explore it 2 years ago.
They discover an empty planet, but also discover that there is a preserver obelisk on the planet as well, kirk with Mitchel and spock beam down and study the obelisk, Mitchel discovers that he can open the obelisk, and they enter, finding that the obelisk is syponing power from the black hole, and powering the Galactic barrier, Mitchel inadvertently.. turns off the local portion of the galactic barrier, but this set off a fail safe, and a preserver, in hibernation is discovered, and brought back up to the Enterprise.
As the barrier thins out, They detect an object from outside the galaxy, the enterprise sets course to investigate. in the time since the barrier started to disapate, and heading to the object, McCoy notices some of the crew are exhibiting signs of greater esp, with Mitchell being the most affected ( You could also have Blondie too.. if you'd like)
The preserver awakens, and starts telling the tales of how her species came out into the galaxy and found very few intelligent life out there, the roamed the galaxy for thousands of years, locating only a few, they decide to seed the galaxy in hopes of fostering more intelligent life, and putting protections on habitable but changes of danger, (Asteroids, local super novas) they done this for another thousand years, and some decided to return to there home planet to live a peaceful life, others explored other galaxies, but during there travels, they discovered other intelligent life, beings millions of years old, that have conquered there own galaxies. beings of with incredible telepathic and telekinetic powers.
Seeing them as a danger, but being peaceful, they decide to construct a barrier around the milky way, so this galaxy would not have to worry about outside influence or danger. They harnessed the power of black holes around the galaxy, with a large power plant in the center orbiting sagetarious A.
The preservers looked over the galaxy for thousands of more years, but as time went by, some ascended to a higher plane, others went back to a more pastoral life, others, like herself, volunteered to be watchers and keepers of the barrier system.
(Guess alot of exposition/flashback.
They inform her that they accidentally deactivated the local barrier, and are en route to a object they detected beyond the galaxy barrier.
They come out of warp, and discover a large station, with mutiple ships, cone shaped, with opening in the front, made of solid neutronium..
The preserver doesn't know of these kind of ships, or this station, its been 300 years since she has exited hybernation to check on the systems, and scan the area beyond, this wasn't there.
Mitchell and is drawn to the station, becoming very arrogant at wanting to go down to the station, drawn to it..

I don't think Starfleet would see it coming.
And I would expect those Borg whales to be augmented in various ways, making it a bit like Pacific Rim. 
I just want a mashup of Interstellar with Prometheus and a little bit of Planet of the Titans, Who Watches the Watchers and Where No One Has Gone Before.
Sounds like a recipe for an awesome Trek movie
