Wow. Fantastic news. And most refreshing to have news from the legit big dogs instead of We Got it BS (although the Tarantino movie Piece of the Action is abit WTF,. Wasn't he supposed to be obsessed with Yesterdays Enterprise?) .. even the potential return of Trek Thor is pretty nice :) (sounds like this is the most likely)

None of this is surprising, IMO. CBS are the Trek masters now. Looks like Paramount is relinquishing the reigns of the property, for the time being, and looking for other pastures.

Well no, Paramount is very serious about it's Trek tentpole:

"Getting Trek right is a Paramount “priority”

"All the trade reports agree that Watts is weighing these three options for Star Trek’s future, with the Hawley project being moved to the back burner. According to Deadline, Paramount is said to be giving Star Trek “top priority,” with ViacomCBS wanting to “make sure they get it right.” Deadline indicates that the Beyond follow-up involving time travel and Chris Pine’s Kirk meeting up with his father played by Chris Hemsworth may now have the “cleanest path forward.” The other Trek projects are said to possibly serve better as “Logan-like spinoffs when the core franchise has been revitalized.”

I remembered him saying his dream project was an adaptation of "City on the Edge of Forever," which also fits with the vague description, if you assume he's taking a bit more liberties with the premise.

Not the first time a sequel to "A Piece of the Action" has been considered. I think it goes back as far as Season 3 TNG and revisiting to find that planet's inhabitants took Kirk, Spock and McCoy's visit as their next inspiration after they got tired of Chicago gangsters. Briefly reconsidered for the DS9 30th Anniversary episoode too, but dropped again for fear of offending with its Star Trek convention planet idea. Beaming down to find everyone is now cosplaying TOS, and wearing red, blue and gold jumpers, rather than wearng fedoras, spats and packing tommy guns.

2 Chris again? Yawn.. Kirk already done his daddy issues in all the other films and settled in beyond. Now more.. Blah.. Super Meh..

Go do something fun and original.

And since NuBSG ended, there have been no less than 5 or 6 false launches of a new Galactica-based project which everyone involved with at the time were very enthusiastic about. In short, there’s been a lot of talk and very little substantive action. I’ll believe it when the first casting calls get leaked.

A follow-up to Beyond will BOMB even worse than Beyond did. It will be 6 or 7 years if a new Kelvin timeline movie gets released, that is just too much time. Let it rest and give us something new and fresh Paramount.

think the pandemic is making studios look to go ahead with previously unlikely/development hell stuff simply to get some projects going (that already have built in appeal) and that actors etc are signing up for stuff they ordinarily woudnt because obviously everythings so uncertain now .. its probably why Keaton is returning as batman, the JL Snyder Cut is going ahead, theres now rumours of stuff like Constantine 2, and sounds like the Hemsworth/Pine stuff is getting ironed out and even Tarantino Trek is possibly going ahead .. expect more previously dead/development hell stuff like the Blomkamp Alien 5 to get regreenlit maybe

This was later adapted as a Marvel comic book issue - Star Trek Unlimited #10: "A Piece of Reaction" (July 1998) but with Picard and the Enterprise-E crew (so while Worf was on the ol' space station)

The two Chris' script keeps bouncing back. It began before Beyond was out, with Paramount signing Hemsworth soon after. Then Tarantino came along, but 2Chris was still in consideration, but their conracts expired.

Then we find out about Hawley's idea - but again it's back.

oh yeh from the nerdist intereview he did a few years back (didnt he say hed like to make big version of City on the Edge meets Yesterdays Ent?) so itd more likely a re-imagination of City with added gangsters than Piece of the Action (or at least COTEOF meets POTA)

I agree. They might want to put forward a project that is a little less time to get to the screen to make up for the hits being taken right now.

And, even if a follow up to Beyond tanked (I don't see given Star Trek's hype status) I still think it has great potential.

Hawley was the ONLY thing with half a chance of interesting me in another movie.

Sadly Tarantino was never going to do one, and a third sequel / daddy crossover to '09 ? No. Just no.

Maybe Hawley can direct the daddy crossover lol
