STAR TREK 4 BACK ON! Noah Hawley to write and direct

Is Sophia Boutella still going to be in the price range that Star Trek 4 can afford?
The Mummy bombed so hard it killed an entire shared universe, so I don't think that will be an issue.

With all the speculation about maybe recasting Chekov, why not recast Hemsworth since the original script seemed to involve his character to a significant degree? How much does the general audience even remember about Hemsworth being in that role for a few minutes in '09 Trek? In terms of name-recognition, it probably would've helped to have him, but there are plenty of other actors who could've stepped in before making major changes to the script.
The whole point in bringing back Hemsworth was to have his name recognition and bring in Marvel fans.

It did. But it also used a bunch of sets and effects from The Motion Picture.

Should they or shouldn't they? Who really knows? People could catch wind of a diminished budget and decide it better to just wait for the film on home video.

I think the likely best course, is to find the best story possible, then budget accordingly.

Sure, but I think they have to make some different moves from the ones they made in Beyond, if not, why would the results be different this time vs. last time? If it's just the same old story beats ''a villain wants revenge and threatens Earth or a place like Earth that is super expensive to recreate'', well they tried that already, maybe its time to try something new?

We have seen superhero movies with smaller budgets do well, like Joker, Logan and Deadpool, based on the strength of their writing.

I feel like sometimes movie producers think the more money they throw at the screen, the better the movie is and make the script an afterthought.

The new Terminator movie flopped, costing 185 million dollars, maybe that would have been better as a lower budget horror film vs. the giant action movie we got instead. The first Terminator film had a lean budget.

There have been lots of movies with huge budgets that did not make the money to justify that budget: Star Trek Beyond, Solo, Justice League, Terminator Dark Fate, etc. Frankly, I think sometimes a smaller budget makes filmmakers more creative, it's part of the reason I like Blumhouse films.

Just throwing money at the screen doesn't always help if the script is weak.

Sure, but superheroes are cool, and their movies tend to do well outside the US. Trek isn't and doesn't.

Without a particular hook - like Tarantino, or being a blockbuster, or a really bankable star - I don't see what's going to draw big audiences to a Trek film.

Going back to Trek, ST09 was a great action adventure movie with plotholes you could drive a shuttlecraft through.

The same shuttlecraft could readily fly through WoK's plot holes. I think people tend not to care much as long as they go in with at least an open mind and wind up enjoying the film.

It was so expensive though. If it was a giant DS9 like station, that would have worked for a fraction of the price. All you need say is, a lot of people live here and it serves its purpose.

In this sequel, I want the threat ( a villain or natural disaster) to be to an alien world that has nothing to do with Earth.

I'd wager that the likes of the saucer flip scene with the tilting sets cost more than the CGI for Yorktown. I may be wrong of course.

ST09: Villian from the future tries to destroy the federation. Barely stopped in time.
STID: Villian from the past tries to destroy the federation. Kirk kicks the warp core.
STB: Villian from Outer Space tries to destroy a federation starbase AND kirk. Barely stopped in time.
Enterprise gets a reboot.

How about a film with Kirk struggling to accept the responsibility and pressure of being a starfleet captain?
A character study, with enough action to bring audiences to theaters, but actual presence and plot.

I'd hope that they're not casting Hemsworth for name recognition, I don't think that's how movies should run anymore. In that case, Zoe Saldana is the biggest name in the movie!

I've said before, but as shit as the new Alien movies are, they're relatively low budget and Trek could quite easily do something in a similar manner, but with more action and adventure and make money. I mean Beyond, you could downscale a lot and probably shave the budget. Remove the motorcycle stuff, scale down the Yorktown and the chase scene at the end, which I thought was a little excessive anyway. I thought Beyond was so strong because of the characters, but the set piece with the ship being attacked was really great and set the tone of the rest of the movie.

Just accept that Trek isn't going to be making a billion at the box office any time soon and stop trying to make it a billion dollar "franchise".

Which is probably why Hawley is in negotiations.

Regardless, I am excited to see what is done with this 4th installment. I am hoping for them to do a little more slower paced character driven movie. Pine nails Kirk when it comes to those deeper and emotional moments, but the pacing doesn't always serve him.

Well, How about this.. There are a TON of good books out there in the TOS Era, Just take the plot of one of those..
I keep pushing the Novel The Latter Fire.. To me it was a Damn good book, and could be a really good movie or Tv movie.

It has plenty of character moments and some great visuals.. one of the better books I've read lately ( I read alot.. 100 books a year level.. so thats saying something.)

So either that or a Klingon story or a Romulan story.. except for peeks.. not really much in Kelvin timeline with them. ( I know 09 was a Romulan, but from the future.. )

IMO they should replace Chekov with Rand or first onscreen apperance of Bones daughter Joanna. Or maybe the Orion girl Kirk was sleeping with in their first movie. Jason

Maybe Kelvinverse Burnham.:) I actually like the idea but not with a new character but Uhura wanting to go into command. I like the idea the crew is split. Sulu is captain of another ship. Spock is with his people on their colony. Chekov is stationed at the Guardian of Forever and you get a Koeing cameo were they call him and Chekov can't help because of a minor inicident they had. Uhura is first officer and Bones and Scotty are still on the Enterprise. Jason
