Star Trek 25th Anniversary bug or player error?

Tralah

Wasting Time Until May 2009
Fleet Captain
I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. I thought someone here might be able to help him. Here's his problem in his own words:

Yep, a real old game that I decided to finally buy and I need help to know what's going on. I looked as far as I sanely could with google with absolutely no luck, so I thought I'd try here. I use dosbox 0.72 and the game works perfectly except for 1 thing.

On mission 2, Hijack, according to the guide posted by Golden One at Gamefaqs.com, I'm suppose to USE phaser on welder (click on USE icon, click on your inventory, click on phaser, click on inventory again, click on welder). USE welder on scraps of metal. USE comb bit on transmogrifier.

Everytime I try to use my phasers on the welder though the item icon just switches to the welder icon, and the phaser doesn't charge it up. Am I doing something wrong or did I get a bad copy of the game?

Oh, jeez, this is going back. I have a vague memory of using the welder on the phaser instead of the phaser on the welder.

Are you sure you're using the right phasers? If memory serves you have the phasers you found and the phasers you always have with you. Try both, just in case.

Sorry, it's been a long, long time. I do have the memory that this didn't make sense somehow like Starseeker describes.

I'm such a dope. I kept trying to recharge the wrong item. Let's pretend this post doesn't exist...

There is a technical glitch with my game. I have been following the same walkthrough mentioned above. (I, too, was flabbergasted about that welder/phaser direction at first) I have completed all missions up to "Feathered Serpent" My screen went black and DOS Box inexplicably closed at the point when Quetz returns to the ship and Kirk has a brief interaction with the Klingons regarding his trial. Has anyone else encountered this issue? What is the cause and what might be the resolution? Any help would be appreciated!

 No shame involved. I was stuck for years on the third mission because I couldn't figure out how to make the components I needed to synthesize the gas to reach the lower level. 25th is a good game, but some of the missions could use a little work.

Incidentally, I do find it funny if you deactivate the brig forcefield on "Hijacked" which will allow you to actually pick up the phaser bomb. This will cause the redshirt to suggest that instead of beaming onto the bridge, you could just beam the bomb there and maybe scare the Elasi into the corridor. (Yeah, right...) You can't actually do that, but if you disable the field around the door (one of the Masada crewmen from the brig will tell you how), then you can actually just walk onto the bridge. The choices are the same as if you beam there.

Dear god I remember the oroborous virus in that level, it was a pain in the arse. Every time i'd get flustered I just walked over to the ladder coming up from the deck below and get shot at by those dang romulans, i think.

All you have to do for the Romulans is either wait for the virus to take them, or throw the Vulcan Laughing Gas down the vent in the space station's reactor room.

My question about the "Hijacked" episode is, what do you do with those drained phasers?

Nothing. ;) They're just extra, as are the little wires you can get from the control panel in the brig (once you have Spock disable the bomb).

I hate the final mission. It's too damn hard. :p

Simple. The Enterprise2 will mainly fly in circles.
Deal with the pirates first (The one that fires 3 torpedoes should go first)

Reverse speed helps when dealing with the Pirates.

For the Enterprise2, all stop and simply face the ship as much as you can and fire whenever you can.

I've tried that, but it's really difficult to fight three enemies at once. The Elasi ships are more maneuverable, and the E2 has identical weapons and speed.

I am experiencing the same problem. I can't seem to find what do with it to get it working right. Anyone got any ideas? Like what I should set my config file for or etc?

EDIT: Never mind, I solved the issue. I also noticed that KirkPicard had posted three years ago. Jesus. So, here's how I fixed it. I have been using the program DBGL (DOSBox Game Launcher) to adjust the size of the DOSBox window, and it allows you to choose different profiles to match the different hardware/game eras. Early 80's, Late 80's, Early 90's and Late 90's. I had been running on Late 90's, and that was where the screen went black. I switched to Early 90's and that made it run just fine with a minor adjustment of the cycles. Step by step instructions are to follow:
1. Download DOSBox Game Launcer from here:
http://members.quicknet.nl/blankendaalr/dbgl/
2. Extract files and run Launch
3. Click Templates tab
4. Run Early 90's template
5. Mount CD as "mount D (drive letter)/ -t cdrom
6. There is no step six
7. Mount game folder as "mount c (game directory)"
8. Run game
9. ????
10. Profit!

EDIT II Electric Boogaloo: I broke it again, specifically to fix it and see what exactly the problem was in my case and it was that DOSBox was cycling too fast for the game. So, if the above doesn't work, then adjusting the cycle in DOSBox may fix it. To do this, just hit ctrl + F11 a couple times. For me between 6-8k works best. Your individual results may vary.

You most certainly can beam the bomb to the bridge. Give it a try. It's an interesting way to complete the mission to say the least.

25th Anniversary has a lot more replayability than most other point and click adventure games. That's part of what makes it so good.

Ah, I remember doing just that. Such a great game.
