Star Trek 2017 will not be set in the JJ-Verse

The main characters backstories are different, the ships and settings look different, the way the stories progress are different. In a nutshell, Nero was the vehicle for being able to state that ST:09 was a reboot by creating this "alternate timeline" - in any regular episode the timeline would be restored and the continuity "reset" back to the way it was before.

So the lack of episodic TV-style reset is the reason it's not Prime? I don't buy that. Sustained cause-and-effect means it is Prime.

I'll just mention the example of Eureka, a sci-fi show that altered its timeline in the middle of its run but remained in the same continuity. Can anyone think of other examples?

It does reboot the continuity.
The Abramsverse was ostensibly created to preserve the Prime timeline but follow the alternate timeline instead to offend the sensibilities of the Prime fans as little as possible; 'Prime' was not destroyed; that's why the word exists. In other words, the Many Worlds Interpretation was followed. So all timelines still exist and NO continuity was rebooted.

That said, this is for Hela's benefit:

I'm backing out of this topic now. I'm starting to feel like I've looped back to the begining of the 'define reboot' argument, and that's probably a good indicator that I should take a break.

THREAD REBOOTED.

This thread title is so misleading.

Every time I see it, my heart rate increases a little, before I realize it's just pure speculation.

Thanks, OP!

Agreed. If newbies feel the need to bump threads, can we at least have the topic title edited?

I hope its not set in the JJverse. The best thing for Star Trek would be to distance itself and put it farther in the future (2500's) that way they can look beyond some of the technology that was futuristic 20 years ago but is commonplace today. That way it wouldn't interfere with established continuity but could still be futuristic looking.

Well, for me whether it's set in the "JJverse" or the "Primeverse" is fairly trivial. I suppose if you pushed me on that question I hope they do what they did with nuBSG and created awhole new universe. Cut out a lot of the bellyaching that goes on..Whether it is shot in the JJ style or some 'third' style is a more salient issue. I hope they reduce the slapstick visible in the films and inject some wrenching, inspiring, gritty and edgy storylines.

I dunno what they are going to do. They can't really step on the films toes and give us Jim Kirk? They can only do that if they create a new universe and do a "nuBSG" with Trek. Will, they give us a JJverse answer to TNG - and given that it's a different universe/timeline/whatever they could reasonably put in an unrecognisable crew onto a B, C, D or E Enterprise? Perhaps an all new ship with a new name? It's hard to know what they are plotting exactly.

New ship, new characters and who cares what 'verse' please. This way we can AVOID all the nit-picking of detail and continuity that Trek fans have used to ruin Trek. No Enterprise with any "bloody letters". Please focus on telling a new quality STORY and ignore the silly details about what division color one character was wearing one season to the next.

Being awake and paying some goddamned attention.

Paying attention to what? You're making bold and ridiculous statements without adding anything relevant as to what you base your opinion on and making it sound like a fact.

You're basically saying it needs to be a reboot or a JJverse tv series or it will fail, that is absurd.

Why not give relevant info as to why you make this assertion instead of giving childish/hostile replies?

Use the successful JJ-model or the failed obsolescent prior model? Tough decision.

Successful? There has been two new movies. Just because they were popular doesn't mean it would make a good tv series.

Also how can you say Prime timeline/universe failed or is obsolete? It didnt fail, the series were extremely popular, other than Enterprise that is.

Their popularity gives the setting a better chance than the dead franchise of old.

I agree. Franchise is the problem. Roddenberry set out to tell a good story with developed and interesting characters. JJ did the same, and attempted to make Trek appeal to a wider audience and to free Trek from all the whining and weird obsession about making a fantasy setting "real" by pointing out writing and production detail mistakes. The books are by far the best for this reason. Be thankful we are getting a series based on a 50 year old story and that our heroes are being kept alive, regardless of how.

To think people watch the new films just to see some "JJ verse" is absurd. People watch them because they're fun action flicks and nothing more.

The new series can easily be set 100-200 years after Voyager, therefore separating itself from the rest of the Prime shows/films, while still having more action than old Trek.

This whole thread and argument is based on two sides' extreme views
