Star Citizen

Since the old thread seemed to have dropped off here's a new one.

I just stumbled upon a near 5 hour presentation of Star Citizen and wonder if Chris Roberts can be considered sane anymore  (don't worry, it's not 5 hours non stop presentation and gameplay, there's plenty of intermissions with just music and some artwork playing).

I can say this.. the scope, possibilities and visuals are all incredible and if all turns out like it's promised it could become THE Space Sim. The game is very ambitious but it looks striking even now in its unfinished and unpolished statr (i hope so because some details need work on).

One thing i'm certain of is that if you want to play this at the maximum details you might need to buy a new PC which is ok since it continues the tradition from the 90s where every new Chris Roberts game was the time where you either had to do a serious upgrade to your PC or just buy a new one

Oh yeah, those were the days (and seemed to apply to quite a few Origin released games) but for the first few upgrades I did, it did seem to coincide with the release of a new Wing Commander game.

I do want to give this a go (Mostly the Squadron 42 bit though) but I know I am way out of practice with these type of games. My current desktop ought to be capable enough to run it adequately.

Well.. the genre has been pretty much dead for a long time now and only revitalized itself recently with Elite and the X series of games

In the 90s at their high point we had the Star Wars games, Wing Commander, Privateer and others.

Currently it may be EVE Online though i don't play it and have only occasionally read up about it but the fanbase and players apparently turned it into a parallel society of sorts with everything our real lives entail. That certainly seems impressive.

Star Citizen has much work to do but the design at this point is very impressive but this can also be said about Destiny and that game burned me bad due to gameplay not matching up remotely to the expectations (my opinion).

I'm curious if Star Citizen will fall victim to the hype or if we really will get something special.

I love the Idris at the end, I'm so looking forward to being a crew member on that.

I'm guessing both.

There will be people tired of the hype who will hate it regardless. You get that with Firefly, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica. Doesn't matter the quality, people will hate it for the hype.

As long as everything works and isn't a buggy mess, I'm expecting the game to be at the *very* least enjoyable. In terms of size of universe, it probably will never match Elite Dangerous, but I expect it to outstrip it in every other way.

CIG has already downsized from a staff of 500 (including employees and contractors) to roughly 270 in the span of three months, suggesting that the company is running into cash flow problems. Chris Roberts is a legendarily terrible project manager. They're still trying to Frankenstein a FPS engine into a space sim, and what's been released of the space sim in the form of Arena Commander is a complete piece of shit. Their FPS module is so completely broken that it's missed its deadline by like nine months. Their community manager continues to fail upward and bans anyone who dares speak ill of the project.

This is exactly why EA refused to give Roberts the Wing Commander license (Star Citizen began life a few years ago as an unlicensed WC remake) -- Roberts desperately wanted the license and maybe a little seed funding from Electronic Arts, but EA insisted on assigning a producer to the project to ensure that its IP and money were being spent properly. Roberts' response was "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you, I'll do it myself."

And we see how well he's doing it himself.

I got a similar vibe when i heard SC was going to include an FPS element and i still can't understand the need or even the function of it in a space sim.

It certainly doesn't instill me with confidence but i'm waiting to see how it turns out.

What's the source for this (beyond illfonic's layoffs)? There's a lot of misinformation going about at the moment, in no small part thanks to that nutbar Manzes.

Agreed.

They're still trying to Frankenstein a FPS engine into a space sim,
The FPS itself isn't the problem, that's essentially been working since day one. The problem was the netcode (which seems to have been solved) and the complex way Star Citizen deals with animations as opposed to how other FPS games deal with it.

Okay, strongly disagree with you there.

There's been plenty of criticism on the forums. The only ones who are banned are those who can't keep it polite.

Ship boarding and exploring derelicts (yes, there will be a rip off of alien/s).

It's less of a space sim and more of a space adventure game.

You'll be spending most, if not all your time with just the space sim aspect, unless you choose to get involved with "ground" combat. The fleets with the larger ships are hoping to get some FPS players to join in as security on their ships.

Just give me Freelancer with modern graphics, a more fleshed out economy, and the ability to move about in my ship, and move about to certain places on the planet. Keep the soundtrack, though. The Freelancer soundtrack was perfect.

Star Citizen's Social Module launched:-

Fucking  at how many ships that dude has, the animations, collision detection and just how literally stupid the "social module" is.

He's either silent with seething rage, or that isn't his avatar.
