ST5 - Unused Uniforms

Aeronnaex

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I've heard a couple of times that Shatner wanted new uniforms and there were even concepts done, but the budget ran out to make them. Has anyone seen a picture of these? I know the field/combat uniforms were new, but my understanding is that the same designer had a different design for the duty uniforms as well.

Good question. There were those field uniforms and Kirk’s jacket that were done, and perhaps scotty’s tunic? I think it might have been different in the previous movie), also Nichols request and obtained a miniskirt uniform, but I’ve never seen the concepts for more unused costumes.

Scotty’s vest was seen in ST4, and I think the bomber jacket was too, but neither time worn by Kirk……so not new designs per se. What I’ve read is there were new designs - and not converted to anything else.

You sure it was for TFF? There were new uniform designs floated about, but they were for Generations. I'm not aware of plans to do that for any other film.

Yeah, I’m sure. The Generations ones were ditched at the last minute because they didn’t work when filming, but there were sketches published at the time and even action figures made. For TFF they never filmed or even made them for budgetary reasons. I just wondered if there was a sketch out there.

I’m sure the jacket was done for STV. Not sure at all about scotty’s vest.

there is even a deleted scene with those.

I think you might be mixing things up here. IIRC, Nick Meyer wanted new uniforms for TUC and supposedly even had them designed before the budgetary limits prevented this from going any further. But no, I don't think these designs were ever made public.

It’s possible that what I read about ST5 was wrong, but I know it was repeated a couple of times over the years in multiple places. That says nothing about it’s accuracy though, as it could just be someone parroting an incorrect story. That’s why I figured I’d ask if folks had pictures.

The TUC uniform thing is new to me though!!! I knew Nicholas Meyer wanted new uniforms for TWOK and budget issues kept him from replacing them all, so they dyed the TMP enlisted uniforms three colors (maroon, gray, and another one), to see which looked best. He thought the maroon did, and managed to squeeze the budget to get new jackets for the main characters - dyed maroon to match the reuse of the uniforms he carried over from TMP. I hadn’t heard anything about TUC though!!!! Any pictures exist of those???? I love the Monster Maroons, but would love to see a lighter weight version of them - especially one designed at the time! Too many of the new uniforms riff off TNG for my tastes.

Actually it wasn't so much Meyer wanted the new uniforms (though I'm sure he'd have made that decision regardless) as it was a majority of the TOS cast said they'd only come back for another movie if they used new uniforms, as they found the TMP ones extremely uncomfortable. George Takei discusses this in his autobiography from the 90s, IIRC.

It was both - the cast hated the TMP uniforms because they were uncomfortable and hard to get in and out of. And Meyer wanted to change them to move more in line with his aesthetic.

indeed. According to Shatner they found even difficult to sit in them.

As much as I would have liked to have seen new uniforms for TUC, it would have caused a continuity violation, as it was shown in multiple instances in TNG that the monster maroons were used as the standard Starfleet duty uniform with minimal changes for the next 70-some years after TUC.

Shatner wanted a complete redesign of the uniforms for his film. It's talked about in The Making of Star Trek V. It also mentions how designs were drawn, but they didn't quite like them. Of course, budget forced them to use the previous ones.

The field uniforms might be the closest to what he wanted, something more practical.

A little off-topic, but the early DS9/VOY uniforms were also said to be uncomfortable and prone to splitting or giving atomic wedgies when some people sat down (*cough Garrett Wang "cough).

Starfleet uniforms tend to be designed to look good and cut a certain profile onscreen. Comfort is generally a second (lor even third) consideration. Even the ENT jumpsuits were apparently more tight-fitting than they appeared to be and not all that easy to wear after long hours on set.

It's not remotely canon, but when DC Comics had the Star Trek license in the '80s, a few issues suggested that the bomber-style jacket that Scotty and Kirk wore sometimes was really a casual variant to the monster maroons and could even be worn by junior officers.

And then there's the issue of the red & black vest that Kirk wore in Generations. It was quite different from the completely maroon one he wore underneath his field jacket in The Wrath of Khan and could be a variant uniform in its own right, possibly.
