The TMP ship was a result of GR stating that the old 1701 would look silly on the big screen. That's why it was redesigned.

Wasn't that more of how Bob Wise described the ship from the series? He also felt the same about the uniforms.

AGREED. I love TOS and always have but I do not want to see 60's production values up on the screen in 2009!

But the disco look was certainly in! As well as McCoy's homage to the leisure suit. Loved that collar.
Interesting how the TMP uniforms look even more dated (or at least definitely derivative of a time) than the TOS ones do.

I think their primary concern should be with writing a good, exciting story, not with adhering to Trek canon. And I'm actually quite optimistic that they've done just that. I guess we'll have to wait and see ...

Dear MattJC, do you have autism? It's not meant to insult you, just that I have a godson who is autistic and change is very difficult for him, too.
