What is the point of all this? Did you really, really need the producers and FX guys to make a precise calculation and show every single vessel that abandoned the ship.

BillJ was the one who was annoyed, not me. Like I said --twice -- it doesn't bother me.

How many were there on the shuttle Kirk got into in the beginning? Would it be too much to think they could cram 40 people or so on one of those in a pinch?
That, and the one shuttle carrying Winona that clearly isn't holding more than 7. so that's about +1 more person to every other shuttle. Freaking hogger.

Two possible explanations that come to mind:

  • There are groups of shuttles fleeing in more directions than just to the right of frame in that long shot
  • The number actually saved by George Kirk has been exaggerated
Of course, with more shuttles comes the question: where are they kept? Maybe a lot of them are treated like escape pods, mounted in the hull at various strategic locations.

And while legends do grow over time, I wouldn't expect Pike, who'd written a paper on the incident, to get the number wrong unless he did so deliberately to drive home a point to the younger Kirk.

Still, 800 saved seems awfully improbable after the pounding we'd just seen the ship take. I'd be surprised if more than a fraction of the crew made it off before she impacted with the Narada.

Voted for The Director's Edition. Although the Blu ray theatrical is certainly spectacular quality. I too hope my prefered version is upgraded in the not-too distant future. I prefer the fixes like the Vulcan planet surface, Spock's weeping, Scotty preparing the self-destruct and the walk from the Enterprise's hull to V'Ger at the end. I wish more of the Memory Wall sequence existed, with space suited Kirk & Spock, as that would be sweet.

The memory wall was dull on the page and supposedly duller on screen. I think they made the correct decision to make it just a rocket-ride from Spock's POV. Kirk's being there doesn't add anything.

Could someone please tell me what they find endearing about the original klaxon? I remember it being really obnoxious.

I'm wonder why Paramount didn't transfer The Director's Edition to Blu-Ray?

For me it "sounded" and "felt" real and gets your attention. The new beep beep beep does not have the same impact and to me screams cheap. The new klaxon also makes me cringe because it has more of a campy sound to it. But that is my take on it.

Do you mean include it with the Blu-Ray, or why they didn't use it as the release version? If the former: I dunno. If the latter: the new VFX were only rendered at DVD resolution and not in HD.

And if you wanna see Kirk being attacked by tiny pyramids, when he is at the Memory Wall, check out the official comic adaptation.

It would have been interesting if the scene had been filmed. But what was on the screen was just fine.
It was filmed. There are photos of Kirk with the pyramids all over him.
Here's one (you may have to cut and paste the URL to get it to work): http://forgottentrek.ottens.co.uk/images/TMP/MW009.jpg

I'll be keeping a close eye on that thread. It's a shame that the Star Trek History site got infected by malware.

Lousy damn hackers! Always having to ruin things fun!:brickwall:

Just a note, that Darren Docterman has said they could have rendered them at a higher resolution, and all the files are STILL ready to be output, they just need the money and time to do it. Paramount just needs to give the word.

Ah, now that's cool news!
