So what makes a certain type of ship a completely different class, and what makes it a variant of the same class?

Probably some admiral's discretion. I'm serious, I think something like this is probably an arbitrary decision from a higher-up at Starfleet HQ. Otherwise, the Peregrine could easily have just been another Constitution-class with some minor differences.

Waitaminute...I wonder if the SNW Farragut was inspired by the Nebula-class Farragut. Maybe the SNW art department wanted a design with a similar configuration (underslung warp nacelles).

I don't see why not. The Farragut could be any class, even a Connie if you stick with the TOS information since it was never specified. SNW's made enough changes to the Gorn and other parts of their history that the Farragut we see is unique to their history. Fanfilms are pretty safe from needing to be remastered unless they have to remaster the Enterprise too. All IMHO.

I like that the Farragut is part of the Miranda lineage of 2x Pylons of the under slung design.

Sure. Why not? Farragut eventually becomes a Nebula too. Names get reused all the time.

To be fair, the Farragut fan film finale (a fair, fun fan film) features Farragut's fine followup as a Miranda-class ship. So really, it all converges.

This new Farragut's class of ship is barely visible in the opening episode too, as the ship berthed next to the Enterprise. And could those nacelle struts be variable geometry?

Doesn't seem like the struts/warp pylons are variable geometry for the Farragut. The nacelles appear to be in the same position in that twitter image and in episode 10.

I wonder if the SNW Farragut still retained the crew size of 400 in "A Quality of Mercy".

I always assumed since the Farragut was in service and suffered the dikironium cloud creature attack in the 2250s that the crew complement was closer to 200, thus when 200 died that means Kirk would have been one of only a small handful of crew left alive, making his survival that much more poignant and the disaster all the more tragic.

On the subject of time travel tech, we now have three notable examples of Klingon temporal displacement:

1) Boreth's time crystals.

2) Alternate future Alexander saying "I know a guy". Said guy may or may not be Klingon.

3) Alternate future Korath building / acquiring a temporal vortex which is easily stolen by motivated Starfleet Admirals.

4) A runner-up is slingshotting a Bird of Prey around a star, but it's really not their technology that's involved.

All told, there's probably not much in the way of time travel tech being developed in the Empire anyway. Boreth being a not-unknown source of them is possibly why?

That's my only issue. Could still work if the saucer diameter is a bit bigger than the Enterprise. Internal volume grows quickly.

Unfortunately they specify that 200 is nearly half of the crew.
