You have to leave room for a slight margin of error. Honestly, the canon is only negligibly inconsistent. Imagine that every episode started with "Captain's Log, Stardate: FOUR RANDOM NUMBERS." That would be the show's biggest problem canon-wise, bigger than anything else you could name, and it wouldn't really matter to most people. To me, it would simply be a source of amusement. Instead of serving as a redundant sense of chronology as it does now, it would be, "ah, the familiar goofy intro that ruffles silly folks' feathers... ahhhh... I love this show!"
