Actually, I remember during the first run being very cautious about the addition of the Defiant to the show. At the time I was concerned that the addition of a starship would diminish the premise of a Trek show on a space station. Fortunately, the Defiant embodied what TV Guide referred to as the 'family motorboat" for the crew, and the station remained the central hub of the show throughout its entire run.
