Spock got HITCHED?!?

In fairness to arranged marriages, I wonder if communications, mobility, free time and individual autarky in centuries past was so limited that marriage broking might have had a net positive function in pre-industrial societies. I don't know how closely the 1930s Balkans fit that, but I would presume not very well.

Why look back? Looking forward, I could easily see spontaneous marriages being condemned as a cruel form of barbarism where incompatible individuals were forced on each other by raging hormones, then asked to humiliate themselves with legally binding attachments - and after wriggling out those when the relationship turned sour or even life-threatening, they'd have to undergo a further round of humiliations in randomly seeking new partners while having the official stigma of "failed n times already" on them. It's just too bad that those past savages didn't have the perfect matchmaking technology available to the future humans...

On Vulcan, such sentiments might not be future, but distant past already. After all, being a telepathic species, they can easily top matches made in heaven: they can find true love for you better than you yourself ever could!

I'd wager Vulcan parents at the very least encourage their children to meld on the first date, so as to avoid disappointments later on.

Why would that be a stigma? And who says it's failure, rather than collecting life experiences and enriching one's life?

Good ole telepathic links. Look how that worked out for Spock and T'Pring. :bolian:
