Spock and Uhura's relationship should it continue or end

I for my part think it's nice to see the socially awkward geeky type get the socially adapted geeky girl. People who study philology are usually geeks, but that doesn't mean they can't be cool... after all, smart is the new sexy (it's always been "the sexy" for me, but oh well).

So Spock is entitled to a little romance and still keep his character integrity, I think.

I like the romance between them, it was very well handled, and very in-character. Let it go on as long as it can! :)

I liked it on first watching - Spock has always been my favourite character, it was great to see him get the girl for once.

However, thinking back to when I was first watching the tapes in my early teens, one of the reasons I was drawn to the character of Spock was his social isolation and awkwardness: I felt the same way.

I grew out of it, and was initially in favour of Spock-gets-the-girl, but now I wonder if making him that bit slicker will damage the character.
Spock was pretty "slick" when he was seducing the Romulan Commander in "The Enterprise Incident", wasn't he? He never had problems with attracting women... they were usually drawn to him without him even trying. The only issue was whether he would be able to open up and return their feelings.

If I was going to continue the Spock/Uhura romance, I'd pretty much start from scratch. I am in no way opposed to their pairing, I'm just opposed to how it was portrayed. It literally was just... thrown in with no development and no reason. It felt like it was done for the sake of being done rather than using it to add anything to the characters.

Speaking of which, would that be a good thing or a bad thing to bring in Chapel to come in and make moves on Spock and create friction with Uhura, or would it be too over the top?

No, a thousand times no! If I wanted soap opera I'd go watch [insert soap opera name of your choice]. Keep it out of Star Trek! :klingon:

I agree with both of you. It was also somehow wrong to see Spock locking lips in public. He always worked to keep his emotions private and controlled, this public display just did not work for me.:vulcan:

Do you think there shouldn't be a love relationship between Spock and Uhura or do you think it should end.

I for one really loved Spock and Uhura in the film. I'm in the minority among my friends, in that I think it was close (as illustrated by the scene in the hanger) but platonic until the events of the film--mainly because I think the transporter room scene is important because it shows Spock making a choice (and one that Spock Prime could not have made) and acting on it. That scene has a LOT more resonance with me, if it truly is the first time Spock kisses her instead of simply accepting her as he did in the 'lift. it's proactive instead of passive, and that is the key.

That also highlights the difference in the way mixed children were presented in the 1960s verses now. Before, Spock Prime, because he could "pass" for Vulcan, chose to pursue his Vulcan heritage to the exclusion of his human side, until after he died and was reborn. Only then did Spock Prime seem to accept himself for the whole. Whereas in the film, Spock comes to that sense of peace and acceptance of both halves of his heritage much younger, through his relationship with Uhura and reconciling with Sarek 8 years ahead of schedule, and his father's admission that he married Amanda because he loved her. It really set up the true differences for Spock due to the changes in the timeline, and made STXI a whole new ballgame, for me.

I'm 100% fine with the relationship continuing in the background of future films, tho I do hope they bring Gaila back, because it would be good to see Uhura in close relationships with other women, instead of solely with Spock. But Uhura and Spock provide a great mirror of Kirk and McCoy, and that really added so much for me, in terms of the focus on the relationship dynamics of the film.
